Messy data isn’t the real problem—unmanaged change is. One tweak to a system, one shift in how something gets tracked… and suddenly, your reports don’t line up anymore. The numbers aren’t numbering. The graphs aren’t graphing. You can't compare today's metric to what it was 6 months ago, because the data schema has changed, the underlying calculation has changed, etc. This happens in every agency. But the ones that stay ahead don’t just clean up their data—they proactively manage change in a deliberate way. Good reporting isn’t just about accuracy today—it’s about making sure data can also compound into horizontally consistent insights that show change over time. This is one of the many reasons we believe so strongly in using an ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) framework. It can dramatically improve a firms' chances of accomplishing this outcome even as systems and processes change around a given metric. Kristen Kelly and I dive into this—and everything agencies need to know about process—in our latest podcast episode. Watch it now on YouTube! It’s such a struggle. It seems like it could be so simple if we could just look to the numbers. But the numbers always have people behind them - moving things to fit better - and people are so fickle and unpredictable. It feels like we just have to keep guide posts in mind, but be willing to accept that there is nothing absolute. Which is hard for people that would love to just point to the numbers. 🌀😵💫
Data changes are like dominoes - one small shift can ripple through your entire reporting ecosystem.
Really good point, Marcel. I found having a monthly cadence of data-checking, managed by our sharp-eyed PMO worked really well. She'd hop on a call with each of the AMs/PMs once a month to do a review of any issues, and sort them to keep things ticking along nicely.
I haven’t seen ETL since my tech consulting data warehouse days. Curious to check this out. Thanks.
"The numbers aren’t numbering." -- all marketers relate this this? 😆
