The table (and heart) that is always filled
This is the season of giving, gifting and of late, the generosity of our community has moved me to reflect on what this means and what I know to be true. The more we give, the more we truly receive.
Clients who have financial difficulties have come forward to say, hey I have extra veggies, can I pass it onto the community fridge for others who need it?
We have residents who tell us they don't need to apply for the hampers as they can manage with what they have and would rather it go to those in greater need.
We have volunteers within our neighborhood who generously cook and share food with us just because (no reason!).
We have a cleaner aunty who is now co-opted as unofficial volunteer as she calls us her family away from home, who notices when anyone in the team looks tired and makes us tea without us asking her to.
There is no formula to this. No complicated team strategy to foster this. I believe it is simple. We get what we put out the world in multi-fold. Us serving without expectations with the purest of intentions has attracted responses from the best in people.
Yes of course there still are the few bad eggs who are entitled and out to "game the system". But much more spotlight needs to be shone on the collective who really just want to be part of something larger. Generosity is never about having more to give, but giving within our means and modelling a mutually reciprocal relationship where there is joy in us receiving as much as in giving.
With that said, KKCS is raising funds so that more can be done. I wouldn't say no to $$$ if it comes our way, but it is good to know that regardless, our hearts and pantry table will always be full with the work that we do.
