Making matings with intent is a key sustainability intervention for both beef and dairy production systems. I had a great time speaking with Chip Kemp from IGS American Simmental Association about the role of hybrid beef genetics in a more profitable and sustainable supply chain. After another great call with the The 3Rs Collaborative (3RsC) team yesterday, and with one eye on future projects concerning MPS systems, a lot of thought goes into using these systems to reduce the need for animal testing (and rightly so!) but does enough thought go into the sources of components, i.e. cells, media and growth factors? It's encouraging to join these calls with industry leaders from the likes of Emulate, Inc., BrainXell, Inc., InSphero (and many others!) knowing that when it comes to 3Rs, people are taking it very seriously and considering all angles! Litter is considered one of the most important farming inputs that directly and indirectly impacts the overall breeder performance. The direct impacts include biosecurity, as litter is usually outsourced. If the litter was not managed correctly, it will create problems like ammonia build-up, increase humidity, foot pad dermatitis, and/or breast blisters that indirectly affect the bird’s performance. 👏 Congratulations to Professor Jonathan Birch from LSE Department of Philosophy, Logic and Scientific Method for being featured on Vox's Future Perfect 50, a list of "innovators, thinkers and changemakers working to make the future a better place". 🐜 In 2021, the UK Government wanted to enshrine the welfare of all sentient animals into law. There was just one problem. Which animals should count as sentient, meaning able to feel pleasure and pain? Mammals, sure. But what about fish or the 440 billion shrimp that get farmed every year? What about ants or dust mites? 🦀 To more rigorously decide what animals the law would consider conscious, the UK commissioned philosopher Jonathan Birch, who leads the Foundations of Animal Sentience project. He and a team surveyed evidence on whether cephalopod mollusks (like octopuses) and decapod crustaceans (like crabs) can feel pleasure or pain. A review of 300 studies later, they recommended both groups be considered sentient. The government listened and amended the bill in 2022. 🐙 Read about his success: https://ow.ly/Isqn50UcSl8

Today´s topic: The cluster of excellence: "Centre for the Advanced Study of Collective Behaviour" In collaboration with the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior, the Universität Konstanz conducts interdisciplinary research into collective behavior in animals and humans. Behavioural patterns such as decision-making, synchronization and swarm behaviour are part of the research. For example, birds are tracked on their global migrations throughout their lives, fish that hunt in groups are observed and locusts that form devastating swarms are inspected. Humans are also part of the studies and thanks to a cohort study, for example, several groups of students are observed over years during critical life situations. The CASCB has developed into a globally networked interdisciplinary center for the study of collective behaviour and fosters a vibrant community of over 160 scientists.
