Yesterday, Onyx Renewables was thrilled to celebrate the groundbreaking of a 2.5 MW onsite solar project along with Sol Systems and Verde Solutions at the Urbana & Champaign Sanitary District (UCSD) wastewater treatment facility in Champaign, IL! This localized solar solution will provide clean, cost-effective energy to Illinoisians—and help UCSD save on power costs while supporting the state’s clean energy goals. Once completed, 85% of UCSD's southwest plant's electric usage will be generated onsite from this renewable energy project. The celebration was attended by members of the UCSD Board, representatives from local Congresswoman Nikki Budzinski's office, contractors, partners, and media personnel all there to recognize the start of construction on this onsite solar system, as well as Phase 1 of UCSD's plant capacity expansion project through the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency. In her address at the ceremony, Onyx's CEO Mary Beth Mandanas spoke about the importance of localized clean energy solutions in delivering cost savings and resiliency for businesses, as well as in supporting the broader growth expected across the region. Thank you to UCSD for hosting such a great event, and we look forward to embarking on this next phase of development!
