The Industry Is Transactional. An artist’s worth is often reduced to streams, sales, or social media numbers. Once those numbers drop, the “support” from the industry often fades. The music industry is built to serve itself. Fans, on the other hand, are there for the artist—and always will be. They’re the ones who show up to concerts, buy the merch, stream the music, and spread the word. Unlike labels, streaming platforms, or even managers, fans care about the artist and not necessarily about what they will get from the artist. Fans are the reason independent artists can thrive without a label. When artists focus on their audience, they can bypass traditional systems entirely. So, what made him switch to digital? Despite initial reluctance, Grant digitised his music catalogue to make it compatible with digital platforms. This decision was fuelled by the realization that his fans had trouble accessing his music through different platforms due to compatibility issues. Also, while digital music offered many advantages, there were concerns about its distribution. Some felt that unfair deals were being made, significantly disadvantaging smaller players in the music industry while streaming digitally.
