Onewater’s Post

Onewater’s latest article takes us to Mexico, where small-scale farmers are fighting to protect their agricultural traditions. Milpa is a 5000-year-old Mesoamerican farming system that interplants maize, beans, squash, and more. In doing so, Milpa is a practice that supports biodiversity, regenerates soil, and sustains communities. Milpa is an important part of Mexico’s biocultural heritage—one that has nourished both land and people for millennia. Now, two huge forces are pushing Milpa towards extinction: the legacies of the Green Revolution and the impacts of climate change. Yet, in the face of these threats, Milpa reminds us that ancestral knowledge may be key to a more resilient future. 👉 Read the full story in multiple languages (including Spanish): https://lnkd.in/dPUjmWiU Written by Greta Rico Translations by Amanuel Getu Molla (Amharic), Stefan Klöckner (German), Temitope Sanni (Portuguese), Carolina Chambel (Portuguese), Sofia Bilmes (Russian), Martha Angelica P. The topic of Milpa is especially close to my heart. I’ve also highlighted its importance in my work as a regenerative system that supports biodiversity. It’s a method that truly works 🙂 - not just in theory, but in practice. In South America, I observe that this approach is still widely used by small-scale farmers, supporting soil fertility and food sovereignty. I’m glad to see this traditional method gaining the recognition it deserves as an example of climate resilience and ancestral wisdom. Thank you, Greta Rico and OneWater, for such an inspiring perspective.
