🧬 Back to PMWC: A Full-Circle Moment in Precision Medicine The Precision Medicine World Conference (PMWC) has been a meaningful part of my career journey, starting when I first connected with this amazing community while it was co-hosted with my alma mater Duke University in North Carolina in 2017 and 2018. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of attending and presenting with the companies I’ve represented, and now, I’m thrilled to return to PMWC 2025 in a new role supporting VC-backed early and late-stage life science and medical device companies at Footprint Bioadvisors. This year, I’m humbled to introduce the recipient of the PMWC Luminary Award, David R. Liu from the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, for his revolutionary contributions to base editing and prime editing—innovations that promise to transform precision medicine. As someone deeply invested in genomics-based diagnostics, I’m particularly intrigued by how advancements in gene editing techniques might intersect with early detection and biomarker development. Could these tools help us diagnose conditions earlier and tailor interventions with unprecedented precision? A recent publication in Analytical Methods introduces an innovative approach that could bridge this gap: a simplified lateral flow #immunosensor designed for the detection of carcinoembryonic antigen, CEA,, a critical marker in cancer diagnosis and management. This study, led by a team of researchers, highlights a significant advancement in #analyticalchemistry. The newly developed immunosensor offers a cost-effective and straightforward method for CEA detection, ensuring reliable results without the necessity of sophisticated laboratory equipment. The key to this development lies in the sensor's portability and ease of use, characteristics that are paramount for its application in areas with limited healthcare infrastructure. The research delves into the optimisation of the #lateralflow assay, focusing on achieving high sensitivity and specificity. Such improvements are critical in reducing false positives and negatives, thereby enhancing the accuracy of cancer diagnosis. By utilising materials that are both readily available and affordable, the researchers have demonstrated that significant technological innovations can be democratised, making state-of-the-art healthcare accessible worldwide. In our day-to-day lives, this innovation could mean earlier detection of cancer, leading to timely intervention and better patient outcomes, especially in communities where access to healthcare is limited.
