Sea vs ocean - differences Size: Oceans: The largest bodies of water on Earth, covering about 70% of the planet. Seas: Smaller bodies of water that are usually found where the ocean meets land. Shape: Oceans: Open bodies of water that are surrounded by continents. Seas: Partially enclosed by land, or connected to the ocean by a narrow passage. Depth: Oceans: Have an average depth of about 3,800 meters. Seas: Are generally shallower than oceans. Examples: Pacific Ocean: One of the world's largest oceans Mediterranean Sea: A sea that's partially enclosed by land Caribbean Sea: A sea that's partially enclosed by land Bering Sea: A sea that's part of the Pacific Ocean Sargasso Sea: A sea that's defined by ocean currents and not by land.

Red Sea The Red Sea is the world’s northernmost tropical sea and is also one of the most heavily traveled waterways. This sea has a surface area of roughly 438,000 km2 and is about 2,250 km in length. The maximum width of the sea is 355 km, and the sea’s deepest point is 3,040 m at the central Suakin Trough, with the sea’s estimated average depth being 490 m. The Red Sea is a Global 200 Ecoregion, and underlying it is the Red Sea Rift, which makes it a part of the Great Rift Valley.

The Baltic Sea is the youngest sea on our planet, emerging some 10,000-15,000 years ago as the glaciers retreated at the end of the last Ice Age. It is located in Northern Europe, enclosed by Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, and Sweden.
