... and approximately 40 years later (the former) AT&T introduced Picturephone service — a two-way, switched, video telephone system — that was developed by Bell Labs. While the market did not respond well to the service offering, the technology was considered an impressive success and, in a way, anticipated the internet because it was recognized that the phone system could potentially be used to provide a range of media services to consumers - not just voice.
