This is the concluding paragraph of an opinion piece I recently produced for the CHME Newsletter. Should anyone wish to receive the full piece please email me on sdball16@gmail.com The time for debating the student recruitment problems of Hospitality Management Education (HME) and the recruitment of qualified management to the hospitality industry is over. Both parties need to urgently recognise the value of the symbiotic relationship between themselves related to attracting management students and graduates. The need for a concerted effort, action and delivery is urgent. HME and industry must continue to successfully collaborate on elements of programme design and operation but collaboration needs to be extended to increase demand for HM programmes given declining enrolments and given the accentuated need for qualified hospitality managers. The challenge is for parties to help one another to achieve the greatest success.

With so much 'bad news' on the state of hospitality education, this article and the scenarios it outlines provide potential antidotes. It is also realistic in those assumptions of what may or may not be achievable! Worth reading the full paper. https://lnkd.in/exM6Zhf8

Absolutely and fully support this. My challenge is how to support VET when the educational systems are themselves discrediting and underplaying this major educational sector. And there is a lot of confusion when we talk about adults undertaking VET education through non-formal and informal structures. Also a lot of confusion in tertiary - non HE VET courses (VET does not need to stop at lower secondary or upper secondary level). A lot of field to work with :)

What we know for sure: 1. Vocational training is key for employabilty and should not be considered as a second choice for youth, in Europe and beyond. 2. There is room for improvement in the way vocational training is delivered across the board, in terms of inclusion, effectiveness, relevance and contribution to citizenship. 3. Plenty of cases of vocational excellence exist, where training providers collaborate with companies and other actors, locally and internationally, as well as guidelines and ideas on how to improve the way vocational systems and schools work. The problem is that all these cases and information is scattered on the web, and difficult to find... No, wait a moment, now the Vocational Excellence e-Library exists!!
