Christmas has always been my favourite time of year. Growing up, my mum went all-out with decorations, presents, and festive traditions, creating a magical atmosphere that I cherish to this day. Reflecting on why I love this season so much, I love the predictability of yearly traditions - decorating the tree, baking gingerbread with the same recipe, and listening to familiar songs on repeat - which offer a grounding sense of routine and comfort amidst life’s chaos. However, behind the magic, the festive season can also be challenging, particularly for neurodivergent individuals. The sensory overload caused by bustling environments, bright lights, and loud gatherings can be overwhelming, while disrupted routines and the pressure to keep up with a flurry of social events and gift-giving can add to the stress. The need for downtime and personal space is often overlooked in the hustle and bustle of Christmas. In my blog ‘Silent Nights and Fidgety Delights’, I reflect on these challenges and share strategies to make Christmas less about worry and more about wonder for everyone - neurodivergent or not. Whether it’s creating a quiet space during gatherings, managing transitions between routines, or embracing flexibility, there are ways to navigate the season with joy and ease.
