Understanding the UK’s 30 Hours Free Childcare Scheme 2024 For parents in the UK, juggling work and childcare responsibilities is a delicate balancing act. The cost of childcare can often be prohibitive, making it challenging for families, particularly those with low incomes, to access quality childcare services. Recognizing this barrier to workforce participation and economic stability, the UK government is doubling the amount it expects to spend over the next few years from around £4 billion to around £8 billion each year. As of September 2024, 15 hours of childcare support will be extended to eligible working parents with a child from 9 months old. 👇Can you save money on Childcare?👇 This September brings the second wave of Government support for working parents when it comes to childcare costs. As many parents will appreciate, childcare costs are expensive and its not uncommon for this expense to be greater than monthly mortgage or rent payments. The first wave of support came in April, for parents with children aged two or older where they could claim 15 hours free childcare per week (based on 38 weeks per year). This month, the 15 hours free childcare support is extended to those with children aged 9 months or older. The scheme does rely on childcare providers offering this, not something all will do. ‼️The 15 free hours scheme sits alongside the Tax-Free childcare scheme which means if you pay £800 into a Government online childcare account, they will top this up with £200. This is something not all parents are aware of! ‼️ Below is a BBC news article discussing childcare: https://lnkd.in/ePFR2wYH #ChildCare #Family #Budgeting #Support #FinancialAdvice

🎉 Excited to share that our paper, “Resources for whom? Conceptualizing and comparing childcare policy design for parents of children with additional or complex care needs”, is now online! The rich comparative childcare literature often overlooks the experiences and realities of parents of children with complex or additional care needs 🧐. In this study, we contribute to the cross-national childcare policy literature by conceptualizing comparative indicators to assess the availability, accessibility, and affordability of childcare policy design for children with additional or complex care needs. 👉 Read the full text here: https://lnkd.in/e7vNvMbn Written together with Mara Yerkes and Jana Javornik.
