Short answer: Yes, it's worth it. Is it necessary? No. But after placing hundreds of accounting and finance professionals into varying positions and companies across the United States I can tell you that you will have more opportunities with a public accounting foundation. Do busy seasons suck? Yes. Hopefully, you'll have some amazing team members to go through it with like I did. Those are friendships that can last a lifetime. Overall- it is worth your long-term career to go into a public accounting firm before going into an industry role based on what I've seen and what employers have told me they want, time and time again. #CPA #accountingandfinance #hiring

It’s easy to assume Big 4 = top talent. Focusing only on Big 4 candidates might mean you’re overlooking incredible talent from smaller firms. Here’s what I’ve seen, having worked in the Big 4, Top 10, Top 20, and small independent firms: 🔥 Full-Cycle Experience Seniors at smaller firms frequently handle everything from start to finish in audits. 🔥 Diverse Skillset Personal tax, corporate tax, VAT returns, payroll, bookkeeping, year-end account and audits, you name it, they’ve done it. This makes them highly adaptable and ready for any challenge. 🔥 Early Stakeholder Engagement They’re thrown into the deep end early, leading client meetings and working with senior stakeholders much sooner than their Big 4 peers. So here’s my point: Accountants from smaller firms are skilled, versatile, and practical problem-solvers. If you’re hiring, don’t limit yourself to Big 4 candidates. How is the accounting talent pipeline crisis affecting small accounting firms? There are many different ways, but surprisingly, few peer-reviewed studies are conducted that provide meaningful information for small accounting firms. Are peer-reviewed studies the best way to get all your information? Not by any means, but they are a great resource. What I do know is that small accounting firms (really all accounting firms) have been and will continue to need to be creative, whether hiring part-time, remote, contractors, offshore, or automation. What creative ways has your firm filled positions that you need? My thesis and research for my doctorate are about small accounting firms and the effects of the accounting talent crisis on hiring qualified entry-level positions.
