The traditional mop-and-bucket approach to cleaning floors in small spaces has gone the way of the dinosaur ... or at least we think it should. Using a string mop and bucket is counterproductive when it comes to cleaning floors in small spaces. This method simply pushes dirt around rather than lifting it — leaving surface soil on a so-called clean floor. Mildew can grow on a traditional string mop, which results in spreading bacteria on floors. Likewise, too much cleaning solution on the mop can leave streaks on floors. Maintenance is another headache. Mop heads need to be thoroughly washed after each use, and the cleaning solution in buckets must be changed frequently to prevent contamination. It's a no-go on all fronts. Fortunately, there are far superior alternatives to string mops and buckets, such as micro scrubbers and modern mechanized mops.
