NCSR "DEMOKRITOS"’s Post

Revealing the Colors of the Past through Science We are proud to announce that NCSR "DEMOKRITOS" is actively participating in the interdisciplinary research project ReVis, which digitally reconstructs and scientifically investigates the Hunt Frieze from Tomb II in Vergina — the largest surviving painting of Classical Antiquity and one of the most important masterpieces ever discovered from the ancient Greek world. 📍 Located at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Aigai, the monumental fresco once adorned the façade of the royal tomb of Philip II of Macedon. 📅 On April 5, 2025, the international workshop “The Aigai Hunt Frieze Revealed: An Interdisciplinary Investigation and Digital Reconstruction” will take place at the Aigai Museum, unveiling the project’s results to the public and scholarly community. 🔬 The project combines non-invasive diagnostic methods (MAXRF, XRD), archaeometric analysis, AI-assisted digital reconstruction, and artistic recomposition to bring this 4th-century BCE masterpiece back to life — in full scale and vivid color. The scientific work was led by the Institute of Nuclear and Particle Physics (INPP) with our Dr. Andreas Karydas, and Kalliopi Tsampa playing a key role in the on-site elemental imaging and material analysis. 💡 The ReVis project, coordinated by Dr. Charikleia Brecoulaki (National Hellenic Research Foundation), is a collaborative effort between: The Ephorate of Antiquities of Imathia XRAYLab (ISPC/CNR, Catania) Visual artist Christos Simatos & painter Emmanouil Bitsakis 💸 Funded by the @HFRI, ReVis also benefits from access to the IPERION-HS/MOLAB European infrastructure. 📰 Special thanks to Kathimerini and LiFO (DYO DEKA SA) for shedding light on the cultural and scientific value of this extraordinary achievement. 🔗 Learn more: Ministry of Culture Press Release (GR) https://lnkd.in/dMtfecP3 #NCSRDemokritos #INPP #ReVis #CulturalHeritage #UNESCO #Aigai #Vergina #HuntFrieze #LargestClassicalPainting #MAXRF #XRF #XRD #Archaeometry #DigitalRestoration #AIinArt #HFRI #IPERIONHS #ScienceMeetsCulture #ArtPreservation #ThankYouKathimerini #ThankYouLIFO
