"Google Grant changed my life" I'm not even joking. Five years ago, when the NMA was in a very different place, I was lost in my thoughts about the direction in which to head for our marketing. We'd be doing what we'd always done. Leaflets, magazine adverts, PR, all the traditional stuff. When Ant from Navigate contacted us to help reimagine our marketing budget, he asked, "Have you heard of a Google Grant?" That was my first exploration into digital advertising. Small investment, tracking set up and off we went. When the first report came in on how much revenue the grant was driving, the leadership team asked me to double-check it because "that can't be right." It was right. The grant brought in more money than we were spending, a direct line to return on our investment. If we know that works, what more can we do? Charities have to compete with for-profit companies for attention. They’re fighting for the same space on Google ads, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. Network, can you help me please? I’m looking for a Devon/South West charity to be a ‘live case study’ for a cohort of our University of Exeter digital marketing students. Every year we partner with some local charities, who give our students a 'marketing brief' (for example, to increase awareness, or encourage donations, or promote a new aspect of the charity's offering). The students first undertake a digital marketing audit to provide insights into current performance. Then each student writes a digital marketing campaign plan, designed to bring fresh ideas to help the charity achieve its objectives. Leading a charity you spend a lot of your time reaching out to others. I have sent hundreds of emails (Literally hundreds) with no replies. Often charities are reaching out for things like funding (No point in beating around the bush) What's better than money? Easy. It's time and knowledge. One such business that replied to us was Julie Gilson from Finally Agency. You may recall but I met with her and Dani Stratford-Flynn and got to speak about all the amazing work Keep Talking Services does and the issues we face as a new and small charity. A meeting where I felt welcomed and I instantly knew there was a connection formed. Not only were we introduced to some amazing connections but to top it off they gave us their wisdom and time for all things marketing. This included a rundown of what were are up to digitally while being able to spend some time with some absolute experts around our online presence. Something I by all means can admit I am not brilliant at. We just had a day with one of their creative copywriters Connor F. . Someone who made us think outside the box and made us really focus on branding ourselves as guess what? OURSELVES. You can't put a price on the above. You really can't. People like this behind you allocating their time to helping us reach more people and creating a bigger impact? Some sobering reflections for charities: finding donors is a numbers game We estimate that for every 1,000 people you make aware of your charity and its cause, only between 21 and 50 will ever become donors. Which, put another way, means that between 950 and 971 people won't 😱 Success lies in making your charity and its work known to as many people as possible in the first instance, because the larger your aware audience becomes, the more opportunities you get to persuade them to join your cause later down the line. If you're seeking to grow your donor base in 2025, start thinking about investing more time, effort, and resource into brand marketing to: • boost brand and cause awareness • showcase your work • start earning people's trust These really are key planks that you must have in place. Remember, if people don't know about you, they can't support you. If they don't care about your cause, they're unlikely to support you. And if they don't trust you, they won't support you.
