How do you know where to place your product bets? Designers have a superpower called "high-fidelity prototyping." Basically, it’s a method where a designer can simulate a realistic product experience without writing a single line of code in a matter of days or hours. With high-fidelity prototyping, we can simulate real-world scenarios and test them with users. Using behavioral science, we get unbiased feedback and data to help mitigate risks, so we don't spend time building the wrong solution or solving the wrong problem. The costlier alternative is having developers build production-ready software. Even with an agile mindset, it often takes multiple developers several weeks or even months to ship an "MVP." This is a very costly experiment if the MVP fails. If you want faster learning cycles, then consider using prototypes BEFORE writing production-ready code. Are you introducing your product through proof of concept or a prototype? If you’re building a product, I know you’re thinking about how you can ensure it’s the next big thing. But there are many concepts that influence this result, so here’s where POCs and prototypes come in. They can test if your ideas will actually work in practice. Both are also helpful for finding and refining flaws in the product’s functionality and design before investing in a full-scale production. So, should we pick one? A #ProofOfConcept is a way of demonstrating that a particular software, product, feature, or technological application can work. And a #Prototype is an early model that shows how it will look and work. If you ask enough people in the product development world, you’ll find quite a handful who believe POC and prototypes are the same thing. They may feel there are no differences between prototype and POC because they have similar goals. This sentiment could be true in some cases. They complement each other because both help you create a well-rounded product that meets the users’ needs and minimizes the investment risks that come with product development. I recently tried out Replit.com and was blown away by how quickly I could bring an idea to life. In about five minutes, I created a functioning prototype of an application concept. Something that would have taken me 20-40 hours just to wireframe and plan out using more traditional methods. Instead of lengthy back-and-forths, extensive design tools, and weeks of coordination with developers, Replit allowed me to rapidly validate my idea.
