Looks like deep tech investment universe is mostly focused on Computing/AI/ML/Robotics….. sometimes I wonder how do I classify our portfolio in Waste water treatment, new bio materials, soil regeneration, long duration energy storage, point of care diagnostics, affordable therapeutics, climate resilient crops, industrial decarbonisation..……our scientists and engineers are also going very deep as they build and implement these transformative technologies :) or shall we invent a new terminology now?
Our sector is already drowning in various terminologies! Please continue doing what you and your team is doing so well, it’s time for the world to adopt. Spade is a spade after all :)
Add a catchy word like "Circular Economy startup" :-)
Yes, how about something like 'Life Tech'... technology that supports life?
Manoj, here is my view, expressed in several meetings and conferences. The digital world (AI, ML etc) are tools, driven by electrons. The physical world we live in is all about molecules. The digital world exists to enhance the physical world, viz., food, energy, health, housing etc. I always repeat this joke: the day I can eat electrons only and live, I will become entirely digital. Lavni focuses on the physical world and invests where the digital world supports and enhances the physical world. We focus on molecules. That is our philosophy.
DINO: Deeptech in Name Only and Non-DINO. What do you think. 😊
Manoj Sir, Interestingly there is so much Buzz around Computing/ AI/ML/Robotics - Deep tech. As I am working on some similar transformative work that you are doing on waste water treatment, new bio materials, soil regeneration, long duration energy storage, point of care diagnostics, affordable therapeutics, climate resilient crops, and industrial decarbonisation—are equally deserving of this categorization. These areas represent the cutting edge of scientific and engineering innovation, tackling some of the most pressing global challenges. Perhaps it's time we broaden our definition of "deep tech" to fully encompass the pioneering work being done across these critical sectors. Alternatively, let's consider a new term like "Eco-Tech Deep Innovation" to capture the intersection of advanced science, circularity , engineering, and sustainability.
Manoj Kumar, the underlying capitalistic datum of reference taken by the investment universe makes things look wobbly to the impact doer and both remain relentless. As is said, ' Unreasonable man wants impossibly, the world to conform to him while Reasonable man conforms with the world easily'. Yet the entire progress is only due to the unreasonable man.
Well said!!
Dear Mr Manoj, Your portfolio demonstrates a profound commitment to tackling some of the most pressing global challenges through cutting-edge science and engineering. These areas, from wastewater treatment to industrial decarbonization, indeed dive deep into transformative technologies. Perhaps we can consider them under the broader umbrella of 'Sustainable Deep Tech' or 'Impactful Deep Tech,' reflecting both their advanced nature and significant societal benefits.

9moMostly I have seen rebranding of funds in India: Deep tech is now AI/ML/SaaS. Climate fund/Sustainability is now EVs. Social impact funds no longer include medtech (happened during COVID). There is more inclination on rebranding of funds by VCs & their LPs, rather than proactively trying to explore/enter new sectors.
