The Yoruba people of Western Nigeria fought the longest tribal war in modern history from 1877 to 1893. The Kiriji or Ekiti-parapo War was a 16-year conflict that broke out mainly between Ibadan and the combined forces of Ekiti and Ijesha. It was a war that ended all wars in Yoruba land. ''Kiriji'' was an onomatopoeic name given to the war from the thunderous sound of the cannons the Ekitis and Ijeshas, under the command of Ogedengbe, purchased in abundance which gave them an advantage over the Ibadan forces. However, it ended in a stalemate. Thus, the Kiriji War remains the world's longest Civil War by any ethnic group in West Africa. In fact, the Yoruba are the only race in modern history to have engaged one another in civil wars for 73 years (1820-1893) and still remain together as one tribe, even to this day. #HistoryVille

Heritage for Peace appears today in a New York Times new article about the Great Omari Mosque in Gaza titled GAZA’S HISTORIC HEART, NOW IN RUINS , which has been damaged in Israel's military offensive. The article highlights the significance of the mosque as a historic landmark and a central part of Palestinian heritage. The mosque not only serves as a place of prayer and contemplation but also as a public space for various activities like wedding announcements and soccer games, reflecting its importance in Gazan life. The article quotes Isber Sabrine, the president of Heritage for Peace, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing the restoration of the mosque in Gaza. Sabrine stresses that rebuilding the mosque is not just about reconstructing a physical structure but preserving the memory and heritage of the Palestinian people associated with it. It is indeed heartbreaking to see historic and cultural sites being damaged or destroyed in the Gaza conflict , as they hold significant value in preserving the identity and history of the Palestinian people. Efforts to protect and restore such sites are crucial for ensuring that future generations can connect with their past. READ THE ARTICLE HERE https://lnkd.in/e5wNkXnE

The Anglo-Zanzibar War is the shortest recorded war in history. It occurred when the United Kingdom declared war on the Sultanate of Zanzibar on August 27, 1896. The reasons were the sudden death of Sultan Hamad bin Thuwaini and his succession by Sultan Khalid bin Barghash, whom the British opposed. The British forces immediately launched into action and regained control. British forces rapidly bombarded the palace. The Sultan's side was grossly outnumbered and outgunned. After less than an hour, the Sultan's forces would not be able to fight back and surrender. All of this war became a historical landmark because it clearly distinguished the powers of colonial superpowers from the minor powers during those times. One very good example of this scenario is that of the Anglo-Zanzibar War. How easily can the power play between countries in their political spectrum change into a war with intense fervor but at the same time quite short? . . . #ShortestWar #AngloZanzibarWar #HistoryFacts #BritishEmpire #Zanzibar #ColonialHistory #MilitaryHistory #QuickWar #19thCenturyWars #SultanKhalid #UKHistory #ConflictResolution #WorldHistory #HistoricalWars #WarRecords #Tribunetrends
