I work with excavation, utilities, asphalt, concrete, and landscape contractors. As if that weren't specific enough, I also focus on contractors that are growing quickly and starting to see the reality of the age-old saying: "More businesses die of gluttony than of starvation." Companies that are selling more, hiring more, executing more work, dealing with more and bigger challenges. That's my niche. What I've noticed is, all of my customers that are crushing, having fun, and making the best margins also follow this same niche idea that I live by. They are specific in the kinds of customers they work with. Some private, some public, some a mix of both. But they go out of their way to build real partnerships with home builders, GCs, owners, and even municipalities and local government. They get up from behind their desk and drive out to customers offices and jobsites and shake hands. They get contact info and stay in touch with decision makers. They treat the whole customer-acquisition process from a sales and relationship perspective, not strictly a numbers perspective. It doesn't mean they get every project, but they've got the mindset that I love. They really aim to look long-term. If you're not doing this yet, it's something to chew on this weekend.

Portland District builds or repairs jetties to calm wave action so that vessels can safely navigate inland from the ocean, but they take a beating over time. So, they need to be replenished with new stone. Typically, that work is weather-dependent, which means rehabilitations and repairs often begin in the spring, when the coastal conditions are safer and more suitable to be working on these important pieces of infrastructure. Usually, around this time of year, Portland District and its contractors begin gearing up to start (or resume) jetty construction/rehabilitation projects. It's the time when construction crews are mobilizing equipment, staging rock, making or prepping haul roads, and fencing off the work area—all in preparation for stone placement. Depending on location and the part of the jetty they’re working on, these repairs can sometimes last through the winter (e.g., if they’re working at the base of the jetty). Jetties Portland District is working on this season: -- Coos Bay north jetty -- Mouth of the Columbia River south jetty -- Tillamook south jetty (All above-listed repairs/rehabs are scheduled to finish fall 2025.)

Update to the household waterline excavation and driveway saga (yes many of you ask). After the temporary infill was completed 4+ weeks after the just pre-Christmas repair (which was 4 weeks after the report) all was stable until spring. At the thaw, the sand infill began as expected to sink, and some undermining emerged. An email to the city noting this and asking again about me personally funding my portion of the old driveway replacement - I got a reply call (which went to vmail as I was on a call. The city rep said they’d get the contractor to look at it and give me a quote. No callback # or name. 4 weeks later with much greater gaps and undermined concrete, and a water valve now about 4” protruding freely into the air in the middle of the driveway, I again used the city website to register my concern. 2 days later a note in the mailbox from the city’s private contractor said they’d be onsite to start work in less than 2 days. And the bonus - a name and phone #. Called and had a great discussion with the area project manager. He told me the next steps, and answers all my questions. Also found out nobody had asked them to look into giving me a quote for a whole new driveway - but that will now be underway. They arrived to start as promised and have begun what they say will be a 26 calendar day journey (which may change if they do my whole driveway). Photo is from end of day 1 - street demolition. By end of today - day 2 debris is gone. So my public service communication has been horrible. Their private contractor has started off with great communication. I’m asking my team of healthcare public servants - how’s our communication to clients? Are they just lucky to see us? Do we share what’s up with our customers? And let them truly communicate with us?

Demolition might seem straightforward, but choosing the right contractor is crucial. Follow these steps for a smooth process: 1. Lay Out a Clear Plan: Know exactly what you want before you start. 2. Compare Quotes: Get multiple quotes to find the best value. 3. Establish a Clear Timeline: Set expectations and deadlines upfront. 4. Look At Experience: Choose a contractor with a proven track record. 5. Safety First: Ensure they prioritize safety for workers and your property. 6. Legal Protection: Verify proper licenses and insurance. 7. Debris Removal: Confirm they handle cleanup and disposal. 8. Check Their Equipment: Modern tools mean a faster, more efficient job. The calm before the storm (well, work at least). Demolition is complete at the Eight Mile Plains site. The team at Urban Earthmoving (Qld) Pty Ltd have done a brilliant job, plus left the site in nice, neat condition. It’s time for Team PKM Earthmoving to mobilise to site and start civil works. This is a 4-lot subdivision, so there is always plenty to do on-site for the contractor. On this project, we have all the standard fare: sewer, water, stormwater, filling and level 1 compaction. And if you caught my last post – fencing and block work have been added to the scope 😅 We are also working with an arborist to manage the potential impact on the street trees on the frontage of the site. Our driveway works and stormwater pipes are running through the drip line and therefore arborist supervision is required. #development #property #civilengineering #projectmanagement #civilconstruction #townplanning #developmentmanagement

Road Construction Update For Immediate Release: September 11, 2024 2024 Microsurfacing Program to Begin The Greene County Engineer’s Office announces that Strawser Construction Inc will be microsurfacing the following roads beginning, September 17th thru September 20th, weather and equipment permitting. Road To/From Date Lower Bellbrook Road State Route 725 to approximately 625-ft East 9/17 Stutsman Road Swigart Road to McBee Road 9/17-9/18 Clifton Road Grinnell Road to State Route 72 9/18-9/20 These roads will be under construction between the hours of 7 am and 7 pm each day. Emergency traffic and local traffic only will be maintained using flaggers (no thru traffic). Travelers can expect delays and we encourage you to use alternative routes. When traveling thru these areas, we ask that you please slow down and use caution as there are unmarked no passing zones. Microsurfacing is a protective seal coat which extends the life of pavement. It is a thin, tough layer of asphalt emulsion blended with finely crushed stone for traction. This is a cost-effective method to renew the road surface and seal minor cracks and other irregularities. This preventive maintenance process protects the pavement from moisture penetration and oxidation. We appreciate your patience and cooperation during the microsurfacing program and apologize for any inconvenience.
