Do you know the financial of your kids' school Parent Teacher Association (PTA)? PTA is a non-profit entity that pour funds to support teachers and class activities. PTAs often rely on donations and fundraising from families to cover these expenses. However, did you know that PTAs can also generate income through various programs and initiatives? By offering products or services to the community, PTAs can establish additional revenue streams. Activities like tutoring programs, camps, or food booths can serve as lucrative ventures. Take, for example, the story of a PTA president who sold morning coffee for a year, she raised enough funds to construct sheds for hundreds of students at their child's school - a testament to the impact of creative fundraising strategies. Moreover, PTAs can seek financial support from local, state, or federal agencies, as well as other non-profits. Collaborating with external sources can significantly enhance the resources available to support educational initiatives for our future generations. As back to school season is in full effect, many parents are busy preparing themselves and their children for the new school year. Educators are also busy preparing for the upcoming school year and some school districts will be fortunate enough to receive financial resources that help them equip its classrooms for new & returning students while others may struggle to make do with outdated resources for their classrooms. It comes as no surprise that Oklahoma ranks poorly amongst other states in the country in education ranking 44th overall in 2024. The Every Student Succeeds Act was signed in 2015 to address advancing equity to disadvantaged & high-need students, however, many school districts continue to miss out on opportunities to better serve its students due to political sentiments that fail to prioritize the next generation of leaders and thinkers. This year I decided to join some of my friends at Generation Why to help gather & distribute school supplies to some of the Oklahoma City Public Schools who were not as fortunate to receive state or federal funding to help provide its students the necessary resources they need for the upcoming school year. Last year #GNWY managed to raise over $12k to help students at F.D. Moon Middle School for the 2023-2024 school year. This year their goal is to raise $10k for more #OKCPS schools and also host another #FillTheBus drive to accept any donations from local businesses & organizations to help steer this mission. How can we make young lives less stressful? I was reflecting on this question recently at a networking event with Kolisi Foundation and EMpower—The Emerging Markets Foundation. The word that entered my mind was ‘SAFETY’. When we think about young people in South Africa facing a multitude of challenges within the education system - it’s very stressful and especially at such a young age. And when young people are experiencing lots of stress at such a young age it makes learning and living a lot more challenging. Within their school, home and community environments having a good support structure and safety is key to seeing these young people flourish. Safety provides room to take a breath, to gain confidence, to feel loved, to be acknowledged and gain access to resources and quality learning. This all adds to a young person feeling less stressed. We have evidence of this model from stories of youth who have been part of our programmes. I’m grateful to be part of a team at The Sozo Foundation that at the core focuses on providing safe spaces for youth in Vrygrond and surrounds. I do believe that everything else flows from there and that we will, with time, see more youth stay in school and finish high school successfully. #educationmatters #safespaces #reducedropouts
