It started like any other Zoom call. My client's assistant was getting their video and audio set up while we waited for my client, who was running a few minutes late. I took a swig of my afternoon iced coffee, but when I looked back at my screen, I nearly choked. There, in the background of the assistant's screen, was their partner… rocking a fit I hadn’t come across yet on one of these calls: their birthday suit. The assistant noticed pretty quickly, gasped, and, in her panic, knocked over her webcam completely. After a frantic scramble, she managed to adjust her webcam and blur her background just as my client joined the call. My client had not one clue. The assistant, on the other hand, looked at me with wide eyes, silently pleading for me to act like nothing happened. I thought of all the times my toddler or my dogs have thrown chaos into my work calls...the barking, the crashing, the unexpected guest appearances. So, I took a deep breath, opened my presentation, and spent the next hour training my client as though nothing at all had happened. This is one of those stories I’ve never told before because…well, second-hand embarrassment is a real thing! But today, on Day 6 of my 30 Day No Fear Networking Challenge, I’m sharing it as a gift to you. Now, I know what you’re thinking: How exactly is this story a gift? Because without a teensy bit of vulnerability, we can’t build relationships with substance. The kind that go beyond the surface-level interactions of: "How was your weekend, Bill?" "Good, good, and yours?" "Can’t complain! Okay, see ya!" When we’re willing to share our imperfect, cringeworthy, awkward moments, or funny experiences, the ones that make us human...that’s where connection happens. This story is part of my No Fear Networking Challenge because networking isn’t about being perfect, it’s about being honest. It’s about being willing to stretch yourself in order to connect on a deeper level. And no, you don't need to bare it all like the assistant's partner, but this week, try stretching just 15% outside your comfort zone in your interactions and see what happens. What’s a work story you’ve never shared because it’s just too awkward? I need to know that I'm not alone! Share it in the comments (if you dare!)👇 Love and coffee, Mick

I used to sit on a volunteer committee that ran a few events per year - technical presentations, membership drives, charity golf etc. We were planning a seminar on a highly technical topic and I had a specialist in mind. Called her, got her VM. I knew in advance what I wanted to say whether or not she picked up. What followed was the most stutter-filled, frog-in-my-throat, utterly horrible VM I left in my life. What should have taken me 20-25 seconds was 2+ minutes. She got through the mess I left her and said yes. ... and we never spoke of the VM, not even to this day 😅

It's imperfections that put humanity into our bodies and souls. What a miserable experience it would be to be perfect and never have anything new to learn or improve. There's no true mastery; the real masters know that they are a perpetual work in progress

That was the client in a birthday suit or the assistant's partner? You win the WebCam Award for most embarrassing Video Conference. Michaela, with your 30 day challenge, have you thought about saving all these 30 stories and package it into a book? You could have 30 short chapters to cover with more background information and business strategies along with these stories. It would be a great read in my opinion. How to Overcome your fear of networking with 30 useful tips!
