Merlin CEO Matt George was a guest on Crossing the Valley's most recent podcast episode to dive into where the aviation industry is headed and how Merlin is building a safer future through autonomous flight technology.
During this episode, Matt and host Noah Sheinbaum cover:
- Merlin's approach to autonomy and how its system differs from autopilot functionality today
- Merlin's relationship with the DoD and future integrations on the C-130J and KC-135
- The importance of partnership with traditional defense primes as startups scale

What's really hard about autonomy in the skies? Well, this is just my opinion, right? So I think that everyone thinks that the hard part of serve autonomy is like the really, really high end stuff, like the, you know, stuff you seen Top Gun BFM and you know, swarming and all of that stuff. It's hard. Like don't get wrong, it's hard, but the actual like difficult part of transitioning from where we are today to like that inevitable autonomous future is the kind of unsexy stuff of like. Reliably flying airplanes and doing so with a fully on board non human pilot and doing the 99% of flying that human pilots do and doing that consistently and safely. And if you tackle that problem, adding on higher level skills like BFM or swarming or particular types of mission execution, those are like apps on top of that core infrastructure, but that core infrastructure. Really hasn't been built yet before. At least you know what we've been doing here at Merlin.
