Using real-time data from more than a million hotels booked on Ramp cards this year, we have a unique look into how and why lodging prices fluctuate. And when it comes to the recent hotel prices in Canada, there can be no doubt: Taylor Swift's final tour dates have sent prices to the moon. Our data shows that the median Toronto hotel rate is $526.19 on concert nights, 122% higher than the 30-day median. Prices are even steeper in Vancouver, where hotel rooms rose 472%, for a whopping $1191.82 per night. Still, concert-goers seem willing to endure the expense—all 9 Canadian concerts sold out. The hospitality industry in the US is proliferating, and Opera is ready to contribute to this development! In the second quarter of 2024, more than 6,000 hotel projects were under development in the U.S., marking a historic record for the industry. STR-CoStar Group data confirm this trend: in July 2024, 1,171 new hotel projects were under construction (up 10% from 2023), and more than 2,350 projects will begin in the next 12 months (up 5%). New planning is also up 13%. This expansion continues despite high interest rates in 2024. The recent rate cut has reinforced positive investor sentiment, with strong interest in upscale and upper/midscale projects (50% of new rooms). The luxury and midscale categories saw the greatest growth, +48.5%, and +34.5%, respectively.
