Dear Esteemed Leaders in the Wireless Power RF Harvesting Sector, I am writing this open letter on behalf of countless enthusiasts, scientists, engineers, stakeholders, and beneficiaries of our esteemed industry who believe that unity, collaboration, and the exchange of ideas would ignite significant advancements in our quest to harness energy in more sustainable and efficient ways. As pioneers and visionaries in the field of wireless power RF harvesting, our work has been instrumental in paving the way for our society's transition towards sustainable energy practices. However, as individual companies, we have been pushing the boundaries of technology, research, and development independently. While competition is a significant driver of innovation, collaboration can also lead to groundbreaking advancements that might otherwise remain unexplored. I am well aware that sharing proprietary ideas may seem counterintuitive in a competitive marketplace. However, we should remember the story of the open-source software movement. It is a testament to how sharing ideas and working collaboratively can lead to robust, innovative, and widely adopted solutions. We have reached an inflection point where we need to ask ourselves: What is the larger goal? Is it to compete for market dominance, or is it to advance our society towards a more sustainable future? I call upon you all not to abandon competition altogether, but to adopt a new model of "co-opetition", where you can compete and cooperate simultaneously for the greater good. Let's unite to realize the full potential of wireless power RF harvesting and make a lasting impact on the world. Thank you for considering this plea. A new paper from our group is just out. In the paper, Bjørn L. Aarseth and his co-authors from the Institute for Energy Technology show how the powerful combination of production data timeseries and drone-based infrared thermography (IRT) can inform asset management and operations and maintenance (O&M) of PV power plants. The work is based on analysis performed on a utility-scale PV power plant. We found that ~0.2% of the PV modules were affected by thermal signatures after 5 years of operation. For this specific power plant, the thermal signatures were associated with a modest 0.06% yield reduction. This is good news 🌞 The payback time for IRT scans and subsequent replacement depends on many factors including loss of future production and local O&M- costs. In this case, we calculate a payback time for these actions exceeding 10 years. However, we observe that the power loss associated with the thermal signatures seems to develop nonlinearly over time. Continuous, long-term monitoring crucially enables monitoring of performance in relation to warranty limits, prioritization of O&M actions, such as replacement, and increases the understanding of PV module degradation modes, their time dependence and their dependence on module technology and climates supporting future project development. Ejike Okonkwo, myself, Helka Kalliomäki and Taina Tukiainen wrote about Gigavaasa battery cluster, where we studied it as a transition space, a concept that we developed in the paper. Transition space is seen as a three-dimensional space, which combines territorial, relational, and temporal transition dynamics. We also explored the connections of different place-based factors in relation to different transition levels. If you are interested about regional transition, then this might be something interesting to read. It´s also open access, so feel free to share it with any interested colleagues as well! :)
