Over the past three years, I've been very fortunate to visit some of the hospitals that received our supplies and equipment. The impact something small can have is sometimes mind blowing. Here's an example of one of the stories shared with me on these visits: An expectant mother who lives 5 hours (walking) from the closest hospital, might easily choose to have her baby at home. However, if a complication arises and the family doesn't have a vehicle, there are not a lot of options for either mom or baby. In order to help combat infant/maternal mortality rates, hospitals are trying to have more mothers give birth there - so they are on call if needed. One of the things many doctors and nurses said brought moms in? Diapers and baby supplies. The expectant mother felt more confident in the hospital's ability to take care of both her and the infant when they had the basic supplies to do so. The reputation of the hospital goes up in the community, more moms come in to deliver there babies, and more babies survive. It's very obvious how the bigger stuff we send - OR lights, tables, anesthesia machines, infant incubators, etc - can have a huge impact on someone's life, but even the smaller items can have huge ripple effects. To give you an idea - $25 sends $500 worth of supplies or equipment. And that can literally mean the difference between life and death for someone.
