Tough truth for folks in sales leadership positions... The market has reset. I speak to colleagues looking for their next CRO or VP Sales role and want to go early-stage again. Unfortunately, it's not what it once was. Comp is lower and the equity upside is far riskier. And mainly, there are just far fewer breakout companies than in the ZIRP run-up. If you live in a geo outside of NYC or SF, your funnel to find a great opportunity is even narrower. If optimizing for money, it might be best to take an Ent/Strat/Majors sales position at a great company in the Security, Infra, AI, and Cloud spaces. The sun will shine again, but it's tough sledding for now.
Valid and likely good stats out there to support what people are seeing first hand in this market
Spot on with the comp Max Altschuler but I’d argue the exact opposite for the equity. Now that valuations have been reset, the equity you’ll receive has far greater upside than before.
Feels like we're all competing in an economic Hunger Games these days. Let's hope the odds start to favor us soon!
I see an alternative route for many to leave the vertical of SaaS and join pro serv’s. These firms have EBITA, and many switching to subscription models, so the cash upside is more locked in.
Spot on, Max. This is exactly what I did. Had a few incredible runs and a few unfortunate hiccups. After 10 years in Chicago and a great stint in EMEA, I landed in Cleveland without a ton of opportunities like you mentioned. So I decided to head back to LinkedIn as an IC in their Strategic org and couldn't be happier.
What are your top five companies in the AI space?
it's definitely a challenging time in sales leadership. the market shift can make finding the right opportunity tricky. have you considered exploring different industries for potential roles?
Or maybe sales leaders will increasingly move into strategic, revenue-producing Partner Ecosystem GTM roles?
Totally agree with you on this Max. It's become increasingly difficult to identify opportunities for those outside NYC or SF... Austin may be a spot but even that is challenging.
SaaStr Annual 2025 is May 13-15 in SF Bay!! See You There!!
11moGood insight. Right place to optimize for money vs. risk vs. effort -> "If optimizing for money, it might be best to take an Ent/Strat/Majors sales position at a great company in the Security, Infra, AI, and Cloud spaces." Startups are for Pirates and Romantics again, for the most part.
