I am only 10 working day out from my separation with Intuit. Having this closely coincide with the end of the 2024 calendar year allows me much time for reflection on my career and choices I have made over the years. I was once asked by a hiring director why after the number of years that I had been with the company why I was still in the role that I was not pushing for promotions. My simple answer was that I enjoyed what I did and the people that I worked with. Having the ability to own a process e2e and helping other is something that I love to do. The biggest struggle I have had is trying to teach those that do not want to learn. The "Just give me the answer" people have always perplexed me. If you do not know something that is a part of your job why would you not want to learn it? I have found that many of these people are overwhelmed with what is on their plate and the idea of stopping to learn something new makes them feel stressed. What they in many cases do not realize is that fact that if they took the time to learn where their shortcomings are that they could better serve themselves and those around them. Last month I finished re-reading a book by Brian Tracy titled Eat that Frog! It is an easy read but through the 113 pages of the book it instills the need to take on the biggest and most impactful tasks as soon as possible. The "Frog" representing the biggest or hardest thing you need to do for the day is what most people tend to procrastinate until later. In the Frogs place the instead go after the tadpole. The small tasks that are of much less importance and have the least amount of impact. While completing these tadpoles may provide a sense of accomplishment they do not in fact have carry much weight in what truly needs to be done. I guess what I am saying in this post is look for the tasks that matter most and will move the project or your career forward. There is 20/80 rule that states that 20 percent of the work can provide 80 percent of the benefit. If you are always eating the tadpole and shying away from your frog you will always be under performing.

Mark, best of luck in the next chapter of your career. If I wasn’t retired in Florida, I would be calling you in for an interview.
