Baldur’s Gate 3 had a story that changed throughout development. I recently got a small glimpse into their cinematics and worldbuilding team, and man was that cool to hear about! Anyway, with the story endlessly shifting, there was no perfect plan that could be set up beforehand. Some things got cut that had already been worked on, some things had to be done last minute because of the changes. When I talked with John O'Brien and Greg Lidstone about how they handled it, Greg said something that jumped out to me. He remembered being sad at some things that ended up cut, but he also didn’t specifically remember what they were any more. Further, he called out that sometimes to make something better you have to remove things. I think it’s easy - in the moment - to think we have to do it all. But that’s almost never true in game dev. The work you just spent two weeks on FEELS really important right now. But I guarantee you can think back to times in your career where you spent two weeks working on something that didn’t actually matter much. Hindsight might be 20/20, but we only get it later. This is tough stuff. You can’t ignore the hard decisions of what to cut, keep, and improve. You have to make those calls as an individual, a leader, a team, and a studio. Create an environment where people can make those calls. It sounds like Larian did, and it's one of many reasons they produced such an amazing game. "I saw this film on my Qatar Airways flight and I'm still thinking about how good and unique this film is." How did we get our film on Qatar Airways? Out of all our avenues of distribution (theatrical, tvod, avod, hotels, Blu-ray), our airlines rights were the most lucrative. Something I never would have expected. It's been fun to see how people connect with it around the world...I get little clues from YouTube comments on the trailer, and personal reviews on Letterboxd. "Another of the weird and wonderful finds on Emirates' in-flight entertainment...It was quirky and bonkers - and whether it was just the right amount or I was sufficiently sleep deprived, the whimsy felt just enough...This is definitely one of those films that is hard to explain but oddly endearing." Our PR rep in Seattle connected us with a film distribution consultant in LA, who connected us with a sales agent, who made the sale to another sales agent, who made the deal with the airlines. I often think of the string of people it takes in order to make something happen. "Hello, I stumbled upon All Sorts while on a flight from Doha to Brussels, of all places. Really loved the movie. A lot! Is there any way to purchase the movie (in Belgium) that does not involve Apple?" I sure wish there was a way to make films faster than every four years, but at the moment it seems like everything I learned about distribution on my first feature film was completely lost by the time our second film was finished. I can tell that distribution models are changing even more rapidly now. Good films will always connect with the audience, but it may not be in the way you expected. Sometimes it feels like a very one-on-one experience, and even if that's not very lucrative, there's some power in that. On that note - I would love to create more one-on-one experiences with the film. If you want to see it, comment here, or send me a message, and I'll send you a special code on Vimeo for your very own copy! If you know someone who'd like to see it, connect us and we'll send them a copy too. It took only 5 people to get ALL SORTS onto a plane over Doha...so let's see where the next adventure goes. #filmdistribution #indiefilm #svod #tvod #avod
