Next Week: Davos and “Collaboration for the Intelligent Age” As a proud member and delegate for SustainableIT.org at the upcoming World Economic Forum in Davos, I find myself pondering the essence of this year’s motto: Collaboration for the Intelligent Age. But how much collaboration is truly possible in an era marked by rising populism, intensifying nationalism, and the overpowering egoism of a few key actors? Moreover, how intelligent is this age we call our own? And perhaps more pressingly: how intelligent will it become? The climate crisis looms over all discussions— yet will it take center stage at a forum so deeply rooted in economic narratives? Are we ready to move beyond empty promises and self-congratulatory pats on the back to tackle this existential challenge with the urgency it demands? Another pressing issue is the role of Responsible AI. How much focus will it receive in Davos? Will we see meaningful discussions on its ethical, environmental, and societal implications, or will financial interests ultimately dominate the agenda? This question is central to our presence as a large delegation from SustainableIT.org. We are here to advocate for the responsible use of AI—AI that serves both humanity and the planet, rather than short-term profits. According to WEF President Børge Brende, topics such as climate change, inclusion, diversity, and equitable economic development remain high on the agenda. The program also promises to address urgent global issues, from energy transitions to AI preparedness and economic stability. But how will these themes play out amidst shifting political dynamics and contrasting priorities? With over 300 sessions planned—200 of them livestreamed globally—Davos offers a platform to accelerate progress on global challenges. Yet the influence of political figures, such as the participation of leaders like Ursula von der Leyen, "Chainsaw president" Javier Milei or others potentially joining virtually, remains a wildcard. I look forward to exploring these questions and sharing my impressions directly from Davos next week. Collaboration demands honesty, respect, and a shared commitment to real progress. Let’s see what unfolds. What are your expectations for Davos this year? Anything you would like me to get a closer look for you?

Day 1 at WEF25: Yesterday marked the beginning of what promises to be a week of meaningful discussions and collaboration at the World Economic Forum in Davos. The energy here is strong, with global leaders, innovators, and changemakers gathered under the theme Collaboration for the Intelligent Age. The day unfolded with conversations and engagements that reinforced the urgency of collective action. Some themes from today stayed with me as I left each discussion, and they are as personal as they are global. Certain patterns are clear: 1.Technology with purpose: Every conversation circled back to one essential truth: technology—especially AI—isn’t just about innovation; it’s about solving real problems for real people. Whether it’s bridging the digital divide or creating smarter, more inclusive solutions, there’s a growing realization that technology needs to work for everyone, not just the fortunate few. 2.Partnerships as Catalysts for Progress: It was inspiring to hear how public and private sectors are starting to collaborate in ways that move the needle. In the Intelligent Age, we cannot afford to view innovation in isolation. The simple truth is no one can do this alone. Without collective effort, we risk creating systems that reflect our biases rather than our ideals. I also had a number of bilateral with industry leaders in which we exchanged views on expectations for 2025. I ended the day with a dinner hosted by the The Shafik Gabr Foundation which included a host of government, NGOs and corporate leaders. Over dinner we heard great short speeches- from various guests - about the different challenges in the world today, both geopolitical and economical. After just one day, it’s clear this week will be about much more than discussions. It’s about asking hard questions, imagining bold solutions, and, above all, taking action. I’ll be sharing more reflections as the week unfolds—because the conversations here aren’t just for Davos. They’re for all of us. #WEF25 #CollaborationForImpact #TechWithPurpose #ClimateAction #AIForGood

#WEF2025 in Davos brought together business and political leaders under the theme “Collaboration in the Intelligent Age”. Participants explored how to reimagine inclusive growth, safeguard biodiversity, and deploy technology and AI responsibly, all while investing in people. U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres delivered a powerful State of the World address, emphasizing the need for collective peace and security, economy-wide climate action and the responsible use of technology and AI. The United Nations Global Compact convened several cross-sector discussions with business leaders on critical topics, including: sustainable finance and investment; CEO leadership for sustainable development; and building resilient and sustainable supply chains. I participated in panel discussions on innovation and technology for the Sustainable Development Goals, climate action, water resilience, and Africa’s growth trajectory, to name a few. I met numerous business leaders committed to driving responsible, sustainable and competitive businesses, despite the fast-changing macroeconomic, geopolitical and regulatory environment. Some of the discussion points I heard most often during my week here were: - Technology and AI will have a profound impact on how business is done. While the headlines cover the advances in technology, these will certainly create significant efficiencies. We must remember that technology should be deployed to bridge and not create divides. Investments in policies, energy, connectivity and devices are needed particularly in developing economies to ensure no one is left behind. - Investments in infrastructure are critical for economic growth. - Now more than ever, business leadership and determined action are needed to address energy access, food systems, digital transformation and investments in people. - South Africa's G20 Presidency presents the opportunity for the African continent to move AFCFTA forward and mobilize investments, particularly for infrastructure and energy security. Value addition, particularly for critical minerals, is an urgent imperative. The UN Global Compact stands ready to partner with businesses and their leaders to advance these ideas and galvanize the private sector to deliver sustainable and competitive business outcomes.

The Annual Meeting in Davos is tackling the challenges on global supply chains. Geopolitical instability, climate change and technological disruption are the main focus areas in today's global commerce. Collaboration between private companies and government - both in the physical and digital world- is no longer a vision of the future. Technology to make this happen is here. The dual impact of AI on the environment is a fascinating topic. More data centers mean higher energy demand. AI is already proving essential in optimising energy grids and reducing waste. Beyond that, we're seeing how AI driven insights are improving resilience by predicting disruptions in supply chains. The path to decarbonisation and efficiency is clear: leveraging the tech we have while innovating for a more sustainable tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing the outcomes of these critical discussions and the steps we take together towards a greener, smarter and more resilient ecosystem.
