In my 20s and 30s, my self-value was linked to what title I held. When I’m a manager, people will have to listen to me, I thought. That didn’t happen. When I’m a lead, that’s when people will listen to me, I thought. That didn’t happen. What did happen was when I changed my mindset, people started listening to what I had to say. Instead of being motivated by a title, I was motivated to help others. When I shifted my mindset to be of service to others, I was heard and I felt valued. I made someone cry at work and I didn't feel bad about it. I felt I was doing the right thing. I was stopping someone from making an error. My manager heard about it, and pulled me into his office asking me what happened. I explained the situation and how I stopped her from making a mistake that could impact product safety. I thought he'd be proud of me, but instead I got a coaching moment and he was so disappointed. How you communicate is just as important, if not more important, than what it is you are communicating. That lesson was profound and I carry it with me. 𝑻𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒈𝒖𝒚 𝒊𝒔 𝒎𝒆! At 16, I was already honing my leadership skills, even if it was just at the Sadie Hawkins dance! In this photo, I’m leading my group of friends (yes, in those matching outfits) alongside my then-high school sweetheart, now wife. What stands out to me looking back is that who I was has always been there—my leadership skills have just been refined with time and experience. It’s the same in hiring. Too often, we miss out on incredible talent because we’re obsessed with whether someone checks a box for experience. In my career, I’ve hired a lot of “qualified” candidates who ended up being duds. But I’ve never regretted focusing on skills first. It’s those core abilities—whether it's leadership, problem-solving, or adaptability—that shape long-term success.
