There is a better way to manage California’s water. First, start by deregulation of entire water system. Secondly, abolish several state agencies involved with water distribution and storage. Thirdly work to eliminate the federal agencies involved with California water supply including dams and reservoirs. Thirdly, investment in desalination, coastal and groundwater and more reservoir storage for greater reliability during drought periods. Fourth, reduce environmental over regulation and laws to expedite new facilities.

A flurry of Executive Orders have been issued this past week by President Trump. Several of these orders will directly or indirectly impact the water industry. While the extent of their impact remains unclear at this stage, here is a brief summary of orders that could impact various water sectors: -The US has pulled out of the Paris Agreement -A “national energy emergency” has been declared paired with a commitment to double down on oil and gas -Indication that there will be faster permitting for energy projects combined with harsh words for Endangered Species Act and Arctic protections -Funding for the Bipartisan Infrastructure and IRA bills has been frozen, spurring uncertainty for agencies with large infrastructure projects that were awarded funding -Policy reversal from Biden's emphasis on environmental justice -Withdrawal of EPA PFAS plan -Attempt to change California's water management in an effort to support wildfire relief Rest assured, The Water Report will continue tracking these changes. As a specialist in water management and someone living in a country affected by drought, I was always taught that drought is the ultimate challenge for nations; a nightmare that can disrupt lives and economies. While addressing drought can solve many issues, during my recent training and research, I realized that water management is far more complex than I once thought. The challenges linked to it are vast, making it one of the hardest sectors to manage effectively. Whether systems are in place or not, what we truly need is real governance and sustainable management to secure our water resources for the future.
