“Claude computer use can train a classification model by itself. We don’t need engineers anymore.” Yeah, okay. Here’s some challenges with that. • AI tools may handle generating code for a single codebase well, but in practice, systems often involve interdependent codebases—like frontend and backend or microservices. How would AI manage those interactions? • AI code generators (like V0 or Replit) are great for greenfield projects but often fall short when dealing with legacy code or maintaining existing systems. • Vendor lock-in is a real risk. If Claude or OpenAI goes down, it’s like your entire dev team taking a day off. Do I think this tech is cool? Absolutely. But do I see it as a threat to developers? Not really. These tools are designed to make developers faster, not replace them. Removing the engineer removes 80% of the value. This is like Devin all over again. 🤦♂️

Software and AI in 2025 — Sonar Perspectives on What’s to Come in the New Year

There's a tool called Cursor that's taking the software engineering world by storm. They just raised $60M from a16z and we're not sure how big they're team is - they don't have a LinkedIn company profile. Most of our codebase is written using AI. Over the last year and a half, we've been able to build faster because of it. Cursor has been a major step change. It delivers a faster, more reliable developer experience and the reason why is a big takeaway for the world of AI. It's not the model that make Cursor great. It's the way the software is designed, most importantly how it manages context. Rather, than working with a single file or block of text, Cursor crawls the entire repository for the lines of code that are related to your task. Context can also be directly controlled by the user, allowing the developer to incorporate knowledge that might not be apparent from the code. The result is a dramatically faster, more reliable developer experiencer. If the first two years of the gen AI boom were about having the best model, the next two will be about system design. The products that do a good job at managing context and designing a system around LLM's will be the ones that succeed.

To truly code 5-10x faster with AI tools like Cursor... Systemize your workflows + break them out into markdown files. Each file is an SOP that teaches the AI your specific design patterns, preferences and project specifications which you can easily reference using the '@' symbol within Cursor chat or composer (for multi-file editing) 🪄 ✨ For backend dev make ones for: > API development > Message queues like Kafka > Data transformations > Third-party integrations > Data type definition > Authentication & authorization And for front-end focus on systemizing templates for your component system, API integration patterns and consider using v0.dev if you're using Shadcn. Below is a diagram help get you started on your journey from prompt engineering to flow engineering 👇 Note that you don't need AI for everything and it shouldn't be used as a replacement to learning real software engineering!! ⚠️ But... it can certainly be useful for onboarding new engineers and reinforcing/sharing knowledge amongst teams so that when your SMEs leave, others can pick up on their design patterns pretty quickly!

I find it scary how we humans put an incredibly high level of trust in computers. Maybe it is because they have always been trustworthy. We ask them to do a task, and they will complete it with the same results regardless of how many times we ask. This isn't the case with our GenAI friends, yet so many still give it the same respect. It is becoming increasingly common that code generated from one of these models is just being committed to a codebase without much review or understanding sometimes. Go back 5-6 years, and you would be run over the coals if you took code from Stack Overflow and did the same thing. It's kind of crazy how fast this type of thing has taken over without more folks being concerned. We all talk about technical debt and how to manage questionable decisions from the past. Shouldn't we try to put checks and balances to help prevent it from growing? I am all for code generators and see their value, but the hard part of software engineering is not the act of writing code; it's understanding the business context and impact of decisions. Do you see this as a problem? Or am I just crying wolf? Maybe we just need another AI to check the current AI to make sure its doing what it should. 😅
