Research shows that nearly 134 million adverse events occur annually in hospitals in low- and middle-income countries alone, leading to 2.6 million deaths. As we observe World Patient Safety Day, we recognize that many of these tragic outcomes are preventable through better health literacy. When patients fully understand their care instructions, they are 30% more likely to follow treatment plans correctly, reducing complications and hospitalizations. Community engagement is key to making this change sustainable. In settings where communities actively participate in health education, avoidable harm is reduced by up to 25%, and patient safety outcomes significantly improve. Informed individuals take ownership of their health, enhancing both their safety and the system’s efficiency. #WorldPatientSafetyDay #HealthLiteracy #PatientSafety #CommunityEngagement #InformedCare #EmpoweredPatients #PatientRights #SafeHealthcare

Another call out, and this one IS focused on #CommunityHealth: https://hubs.la/Q02Zzm6l0! Health Standards Organization (HSO) is developing a new edition of the #PrimaryHealthCare Services standard covering quality, equity, person-centredness and more across all populations, ages, and settings, including public health, primary care, and community health services. "The standard will address the social determinants of health and cover a range of services, including health promotion, illness prevention, chronic disease management, and population health management. This includes integrating health and social services, social medicine, #SocialPrescribing (!!), system navigation, and social care. HSO is seeking feedback from participants, caregivers, providers, leaders, and other interest holders to ensure the work supports safe, equitable, people-centred, and comprehensive care across the continuum and lifespan, considering social determinants of health." What are you waiting for?!?! We need you to help take the lead!

The guidelines for conducting yourself as a physician used to be: detach from emotion for the sake of getting the job done. In order to be the best listener for our patients we first must be willing to listen to ourselves and what we as health care providers need. Taking care of ourselves and feeling our emotions alongside our patients allows us to both set an example and connect better to those who we care for. "What healing might emerge for patients, clinicians, health care systems, and society if we addressed the barriers to peace in healing and health?" Nova Scholar Kurt Stange and co-authors highlight the importance of fostering peace in health care interactions for both patients and providers. For patients, feeling seen, valued, and cared for can support healing. Similarly, a focus on peace can counter burnout for clinicians and contribute to a more fulfilling and humane practice. However, current systems often prioritize consumerism and commodification, undermining efforts toward more peaceful clinical practices.
