Let's hear from Kerry, a Civil Supervisor at Eifers. 👷♂️ I've been in the industry probably 35 years. I started off on the ground as a labourer and then moved up from there to a machine operator. And then I was told by my boss - you're gonna start looking after jobs and become a leading hand and moved on from there. 🛠️ My Daily Grind: My goal is to ensure that all the things I've planned and organised all fall into place and keep things moving forward. I make sure that everybody gets out at the end of the day. 💡 Greatest lesson learned so far: Think about tomorrow - today. So plan tomorrow today and work on that. Today's already been planned yesterday, so you're always staying ahead of it. 🚧 Why I love my job: I think the end product and what we do is a new benchmark for civil construction. Even to this day, when people ask me what I do and what's so special about it. I say well, our specialty is our high early strength concrete. We can pull out a slab out on the runway at 10 o'clock and by 5 AM the next morning, a plane is landing back on it Eifers has grown since I've gone on board. We've grown immensely. Mechanical pipe jacking is a trenchless pipeline laying technology. Before pipe jacking construction, the selection of the pipe jacking machine cutterhead plays a key role. How to choose a suitable pipe jacking machine cutterhead? ①Soft soil layer cutter heads suitable for soft ground generally include: scrapers, edge knives and shell knives. Hard or rocky formations often use hobs. The cutter head required for composite strata needs to be selected based on the characteristics of both soft soil and hard soil. When the soft soil is mixed with pebbles or larger stones, a composite cutterhead needs to be used. ②Rock formation When considering a rock cutterhead, it is important to understand the characteristics of the rock: rock strength, rock quantity, whether the rock is broken or layered, etc. Generally speaking, tunneling through harder rock requires smaller tool spacing and greater thrust force. Increasing the number of tools on the cutterhead and increasing the tool size can increase the thrust force of the cutterhead. In addition, understanding the amount of thrust is critical to tool life and tunneling efficiency. Excessive thrust will reduce the service life of the cutterhead bearings, and damaged cutterhead bearings will cause slippage, causing economic losses and safety hazards. Hobs are often used in rock formations. Before the stones enter the secondary crushing chamber, they are cut into small pieces by the hobs on the cutterhead. The opening rate of hard rock cutterhead is usually 10%-20%. ③Composite formation Composite stratum refers to a stratum combination consisting of two or more different strata within the scope of the underground engineering excavation section and in the direction of the excavation extension, and the geotechnical, engineering geological, hydrogeological and other characteristics of these strata are very different. . When the pipe jacking section is located in a composite stratum (two or more strata), the dominant stratum often determines the choice of pipe jacking construction method. If the difference in softness and hardness between the various soil units in the composite stratum is too large, sufficient attention must be paid to prevent the machine head from twisting during the jacking process. The cutter head opening ratio of pipe jacking machines suitable for composite formations is usually 20% to 40%. Harder gravel and pebbles will be crushed twice and then transported.
