Lessons from my 11 year old: What is your first priority? I was trying to get my son out the door this morning, and he was doing something that "would only take a minute"...that was taking multiple minutes. I told him he'd have to come back to it later, and that "as a kid, school was his first priority". He turned to me and said: "Like school is your first priority." And I paused. I didn't really like that. I responded: "I know I put a lot of my time and effort into school, but that's because you guys are my first priority." And he paused and then said: "And you work hard at school because of the family." Yes. Exactly this, yes. And I'm so so glad that he sees it. School is where most of my attention goes a lot of the time, but it's because it's what is going to be better for my family (and for making the world a better place for them). It now has me thinking of how to frame school for my kids in a way that shows them it isn't "going to school" that's the priority, it's "building a brighter future for themselves". How do you talk to children about the importance of school and how do you frame it to show them why it's important?
