My Backend SWE internship at Tesla did not feel like an internship. I had an amazing taste of what good software engineering is all about. It felt so good to work in a tight-knit team of some of the most smartest folks in engineering imo! Trust me when I say, the velocity at which the team operated was initially overwhelming. As a newbie I felt curious and enthusiastic, but at the same time I was taken aback by the sheer amount of engineering brilliance delievered by the team. My mentor/manager gave me a piece of advice which is my biggest takeaway from my internship. "Be curious and learn a lot of things, but carve your niche for being an expert in a few". Simply put be a T-Shaped/Comb-Shaped Engineer (Here is an explanation I liked [https://lnkd.in/dhjr9AwZ] for the uninitiated). This greatly shaped my thought process as an engineer through the rest of my internship, and be mindful of the big picture contributions I made as an intern. I gave a shot at becoming a T-engineer and went super deep with graph databases (neo4j is super cool!!). With this, I was able to better channelize my imposter-syndrome to identify what interested me and expand my horizon to satiate my learning appetite. In essence, I think that's what true Software Engineering is about - learning and building. And this internship helped me do precisely that - learn and build. I am grateful and I consider myself lucky to have had this opportunity. In a way, I got a great glimpse of what life as a Software engineer would be, while being an intern. So, my internship didn't feel like an internship. It felt like a prelude to where I am headed on my journey.
