Have you ever been considering an idea and then something happens to move you off the fence? This is one of those times. This is the first post on a subject I feel passionately about, yet have been on the sidelines for too long. As many of you know, I’ve been fortunate to take on several cycling challenges, from riding across the USA to Guinness World Records to 24 hours in a Carmel, Indiana roundabout.  Those rides have provided more Type II fun (misery in the moment, fun when it’s done) than I could ever imagine.  Plus they’ve raised over $40,000 for charities such as World Bicycle Relief and Filter of Hope.  But so what?  Is all the planning and effort simply to raise money and hang a Guinness certificate on my wall?  I think there’s more. I could fill volumes with the stories and Life lessons learned along the way.  And the first is- anything is possible!  Whether it’s a world record, starting a business, or whatever matters to you- if you have a dream, plan diligently, and work hard, nothing is impossible.  Whether it’s here on social media or in person, it’s time to share these.  Why?  To inspire others to do the same.  That’s the idea.  Now the “something happens” moment. Key points from the article: - EMS vehicles are not delayed by bike lanes in getting folks to emergency rooms as confirmed by the City of Toronto’s EMS leads. - There is not a petition of 50,000 people against the bike lanes on Bloor. It’s more like 13,000 who’ve signed over several years now and Cycle Toronto’s petition in support of bike lanes is approaching that number in just weeks. - Bike lanes are good for business! They boost sales in areas they are installed, attract higher spending clientele, can increase property values, and even attract talented work forces. - Bike lanes do not increase congestion, they move people around more efficiently, create safer driving routes (less collisions, less congestion), and get people out of single occupancy motor vehicle, which actually are the cause of congestion. - Side streets are not the answer. Unconnected segments of bike lanes that force cyclists to take circuitous routes on various side streets will not encourage people to get out of their cars and onto bikes; Transportation should be planned based on facts and data and systems thinking.

🚴♂️ Pedaling Toward Adventure: My 8th Year Riding from Seattle to Portland 🚴♀️#STP2024 It’s that time of year again – the annual pilgrimage from Seattle to Portland, a double century journey that tests both body and spirit. This will be my eighth year participating in this epic ride, and each time feels like a new adventure. The road to Portland isn’t one I travel alone. For months leading up to the event, I’ve been part of a tight-knit cycling team. We’ve logged countless miles together, pushing our limits, sharing stories, and encouraging one another. There’s something magical about the camaraderie that forms during those early morning rides – the wind at our backs, the pavement stretching out before us. While the physical benefits of cycling are undeniable, this ride is about more than just personal fitness. It’s a chance to build community, raise awareness, and give back. Our team partners with the Cascade Bicycle Club, supporting their mission to promote cycling advocacy, safety, and education. We ride for a cause – raising funds for nonprofits and championing social responsibility. ****The Final Push**** Training for this event is no small feat. Four months of dedication, early mornings, and hill repeats. But as the mid-July weekend approaches, the anticipation builds. We gather at the starting line, our bikes gleaming in the morning sun. The countdown begins, and suddenly, it’s just us, the road, and the promise of 206 miles ahead. So, here’s to another year of spinning pedals, forging friendships, and crossing that finish line in downtown Portland, we’re on a mission, fueled by passion and powered by two wheels. Bike Swaps in May 2024 Edmonton Bike Swaps - what’s new, what’s old, and how you can help us help others. 01 May 2024 - Alberta Bike Swap was founded in 2011 to provide a safe place to buy, sell, and donate bikes. Over the last 13 years Chris and Laura Grant have swapped thousands of tech-checked and serial-number recorded bikes. They’ve also been a conduit for thousands of donated bikes and they fund safe cycling in Alberta through the only recognized and standardized cycling education program – CAN-BIKE. What’s new? 1. There are two Edmonton Bike Swap events: May 11 at MacEwan University north side underground parking lot 10803 – 105 Ave NW and June 8 at CCT Golf Dome 11925 Kingsway NW. 2. Alberta Bike Swap is hosting a bike donation drive for Sports Central at both Edmonton Bike Swaps; 3. Alberta Bike Swap is building the CAN-BIKE certified effective cycling instructor base for the next generation. The first stage is a Level 4 Course May 25-26 and the Instructor Workshop May 30 - June 2. What’s old? This is still old: Ask anyone in Alberta whether they’ve heard about Alberta Bike Swap and you’ll typically get, “yes, I’ve heard of them”. This is getting really old, so please help us get the word out. What’s important? Alberta Bike Swap are honoured to be Bike Index Ambassadors and will continue preventing the selling and buying of stolen bikes; Sport Central’s mission is to empower kids, one piece of sports equipment at a time. The power of a bike is not limited to the hours of enjoyment a kid will experience, but also opens a new world of independence, physical activity, and offers an additional method of transportation. Last year, Sport Central Association saw a 48% increase in utilization of their services. The premier of Ontario is considering a proposal to ban bike lanes in places where they would replace a car lane. This is a great example of the reason why we started Movement: Metro Vancouver Transit Riders. The Ontario PCs are clearly trying to cultivate the support of aggrieved motorists at the expense of cyclists. That might seem like an excellent political ploy for a province where less than 5% of the population bike to work. The way to get Ford to stop doing this is to make him afraid that he will lose votes in places where he needs them. That means cyclists need to get as many people as possible to tell PC MPPs that they oppose this idea. How do you do that? Build coalitions with other groups - faith groups, parent groups, anyone! Find people that are explicitly conservative, people that are friends with PC MPPs. But all that work takes time and people power. It takes organizers. There is almost NO MONEY in Canada for this kind of work; trust me, it's all I think about. I'm writing a report about it. The number one thing YOU can do to help is to find 5-figure donations and direct them to your local group. This can be from local businesses, local charities, rich people, anyone. And if you don't have access to that, just donate anything! If you're upset about Ford's bike lane ban, donate to Cycle Toronto, Bike Ottawa (Citizens for Safe Cycling), Cycle Hamilton, etc. If you're upset about how racialized communities in Metro Vancouver bear the brunt of transit underfunding, please please donate to Movement: Metro Vancouver Transit Riders!
