Unglamorous Sports Management (An infrequently recurring series...)- One of the most under-appreciated traits of a truly amazing youth sports program is "attention to detail". More specifically, PREDICTIVE attention to detail. As a program transitions from registration to participation, this takes on particular importance. While game scheduling, officiating, scorekeeping, equipment and uniforms are baseline details that all organizations are responsible for fulfilling, it's the often forgotten or overlooked details that set great organizations apart. Things like: 🏀 Spectator seating & comfort (ADA accessible options, restrooms, access to drinking water, adequate waste collection, etc) ⚽ Team / game related resources (web or app accessible schedules, game rules, age group format differences, contact info for problems / feedback) 🏈 Facility maps / guides and on-site signage (web or app accessible, including addresses, where to park, where to enter, field / court layout). ⚾ Gameday operations (extension cords, scoresheets, pencils, towels, rules reference guides, incident reports, extra gear, extra whistles, pinnies, etc) 🎾 First aid supplies and procedures (ice packs, basic first aid, AED access, emergency action plan and contact info) 🚨 Emergency contacts - who you can contact and who will confidently respond (from school district, park district, or organization) if / when problems arise that prevent a game from being played or the event from moving forward. A great rule of thumb when tending to these logistical details in preparation for the delivery of your league and / or event is to try to "think like a parent".... what kinds of things would you be anxious about as you head to your child's first game, and what kinds of things would you be upset about if overlooked during your child's game? It won't be perfect, and inevitably everyone forgets something... but tending to these details as preemptively as possible helps prevent them from being major sources of dissatisfaction in the moment, and gives the (appropriate) impression that "Wow, they really thought of everything!"... satisfied with the experience, and with their decision to participate in your program. #unglamorous #sportsmanagement #youthsports #coaching #inclusion #equity

It was great running a workshop this week with one of our Local Government clients to help their Sport & Recreation Team think about how they work with the community (including for club development, facility compliance, and Council-led participation programs). BJ Fogg's Model of Behaviour is a really useful model to analyse why your strategies might or might not be working (because who doesn't want their work to count right?). Take this example when it comes to promoting a club development workshop: Firstly, you need to get the 'Attention' of your target audience. A standard promotional tactic is to send club leaders an email with information about a Council workshop. However email is a poor medium for getting people's attention. It often arrives when someone is busy, there are countless other emails to attend to, and within a few hours, the email is so far down the inbox it is out of sight and out of mind. If you want to maximise your impact, you need more volunteers to attend your club development, and to do that you need to get more volunteers paying attention. Secondly, 'Ability' is important too. A live in-person workshop can be an enjoyable environment but do many of your volunteers have the 'ability' to even be there? For many volunteers it will clash with parenting duties, for others they will have club training duties, and others may not feel confident enough to step into a room on their own with a crowd of people they don't know. If you want to maximise your impact, you need to provide club development options that are within someone's ability to access. Finally, you need to make sure the target audience has the 'Motivation'. Does the topic meet a genuine need or desire of the volunteer? Does the volunteer know what problems the workshop will solve? Will the workshop provide opportunities to master new skills and become more empowered? If you want to maximise your impact you need to ensure your target audience is motivated to attend. Unless your communication and service design is addressing the requirements of attention, ability, and motivation, you'll never maximise the impact of your work. If you have a little bit of budget left before the end of financial year, why not book in for some practical PD, and together we can devise some strategies to achieve your Sport & Recreation team's goals. #ProfessionalDevelopment #ServiceDesign #ProSportCoach

Did you see any marketing materials for the program/event? How could they market better? I heard about the event through a friend in my fraternity and decided to be part of the team. I didn’t see much marketing but they could've improved that by the school posting the game online or in social media like instagram to spread the word    Describe where you saw employees/workers and how many you saw.  What were they doing? The workers were the referees of the game and the people working the stand swiping peoples Cino cards to make sure you could play. The workers also handed out colored shirts for the players and flags to give to each person.     What was the most enjoyable element of the experience for you?  Is this something that would be enjoyable for all ages and genders? Why or why not? The most enjoyable part was seeing my fraternity and the other teams friends talk to each other and spread positivity. Yes, I think all ages can come watch and have a good time being around this environment   What did you observe that could be improved?  I observed that the refs didn’t have loud enough whistles and you couldn’t hear the play call so well   Would you go again? Why or why not?  Yes I will go again and be part of the team because I enjoy football and it is a great way to stay active and be around friends   What did you learn from the program/event?  You should observe what is taking place during the program/event in terms of leadership, participation, flow, etc… I learned about team chemistry and overall bonding with friends.When you get away from just hanging out at home to playing in a sport event it really is awesome and a great time. 

I’m a fan of football, but not a fan of the game. For me it’s about the gathering. The tailgates, the watch parties, and most of all the collective effervescence in the stadium or the room when something exciting happens. Oh, and the chicken wings, of course. In Alumni Relations, games give us a fabulous opportunity to gather alumni together and support their pride in the institution. But if all we did was produce the events, that’d make us party planners, not engagement officers. As engagement officers, our job is to move people along the engagement continuum towards a broader relationship with the institution, so here are some tips: 🏈 Set up registrations for these gatherings - even private house parties! Offer swag or “event in a box” goodies as incentive to get the contact info 🏈Use that contact info to reach out before and after the event - especially to the newly engaged, and find out what brought them to this particular party 🏈Follow up quickly with another gathering that replicates this fun, pride and connection - maybe it’s another game or a different type of event that fits in with your engagement goals 🏈Identify the people who organized unofficial gatherings and talk to them about their interests and possibly serving as volunteers Net/net: Sports-related alumni events can inspire deeper and broader involvement around other institutional priorities. How does your sport do on the BBQ test? What's the BBQ test???? It's Saturday evening. A group of parents / carers with kids under ten years of age are having a catch-up - a BBQ - maybe a couple of drinks - just a nice, friendly local community catch up with family friends. One of the dads asks one of the other dads..."What did you guys do today?". My friends and colleagues - THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT MOMENT IN YOUR SPORT.....let's listen to his response. Did the Dad respond: "We went to football. It was awful. There was no referee so one of the mums who used to be player had to referee - no whistle, no referee shirt. There were no lines marked - so we had to wait for that to be done. The coach was late. The club manager forgot to bring the right jerseys so the team wore old shirts which were too big and weren't that clean. Can you believe they charged us $500.00 for the season then we had to pay for shoes, Association Registrations, some Club admin fees on top of that. We were short two players and lost 11-nil. No water or oranges at half time. The toilets were locked because someone had taken the keys home and forgot to bring them back. It was horrible. The kids hate it. We're looking for something else". Or...did the Dad say: "We went to football. It's brilliant. The people are great. Everyone gets there early and we all chip in to make it work for the kids. We take turns cleaning the team uniforms, cutting up oranges and car-pooling the kids to make sure we've always got a full team. The coach was there early spending time with some of the kids on skills and drills - she's awesome and the kids love her. The Club can't do enough for us. They're always there welcoming new parents, supporting kids - incredible bunch of people. You have to give it a try". Forget marketing. Forget advertising. Junior sport is word of mouth - and what words come from mouths of other parents / carers is by far the most influential factor in what sports kids play.
