Lunar New Year is the beginning of a new year based on lunar calendars or, informally but more widely, lunisolar calendars. Lunar calendars follow the lunar phase while lunisolar calendars follow both the lunar phase and the time of the solar year. The event is celebrated by numerous cultures in various ways at diverse dates. Lunar New Year 2025 falls on Wednesday, January 29th, and celebrations culminate with the Lantern Festival on February 12th. Celebrations last up to 16 days, but only the first 7 days are considered a public holiday (January 29th–February 4th, 2025). Chinese New Year marks the transition between zodiac signs: 2025 is the Year of the Snake; 2024 the Year of the Dragon.

As China has the largest population celebrating the new year at this time, the term “Chinese New Year” is commonly used. Today's new moon is also the Lunar New Year and ushers in the year of the Wood Snake. I've been reading about what energy we can expect in the year to come. In the Chinese zodiac, Wood represents vitality, creativity, steadiness, and calmness. Snake represents wisdom, knowledge, intelligence, intuition, and creativity. Snakes are also revered for their ability to shed their skin and renew themselves, symbolizing transformation and rebirth. The Wood Snake is charming, intelligent, and creative, but also secretive and cunning. Wood adds more creativity, as well as flexibility and growth, to Snake’s traits, making this an ideal year to focus on planning and transformation. At the beginning of 2025, the world was still under the rulership of the outgoing Wood Dragon, and so a period with plenty of activity was expected. (This definitely happened in the U.S.) During Snake years, the world is supposed to stop to think. Let's hope that proves true.

The snake, being clever and resourceful, is said to have cleverly ridden on the back of the horse and arrived just before it, earning its place as the sixth animal in the zodiac cycle. The 28-day lunar cycle always begins with a new moon. Think of it as the first line of a story or the first few notes of a song. And if you’re one of the zodiac signs most affected by the new moon in Taurus of May 2024, you’re on the precipice of so much positive change. This new moon will help you process the heavy energy that’s been weighing on you, as the storm of eclipse season and the mayhem of Mercury retrograde have both finally settled. The two most climactic moments of the lunar cycle take place at the new moon and the full moon, acting as markers in time that highlight turning points in our lives. The full moon may get most of the applause, as its bright light always heightens the energy. The new moon is usually a much quieter experience, but that doesn’t take away from its importance. You may feel tired, hollow, and hopeful all at the same time, as the new moon forces you to make peace with the past and embrace a new whole chapter of your life. Something that begins under a new moon will always take shape by the time the corresponding full moon takes place six months later. The intentions you set during a new moon will help you break away from what is no longer in alignment with your path as you take the first steps toward everything that is. While you don’t have control over the future, you are capable of influencing the outcome. And because this is the first new moon taking place after the end of eclipse season, this is a chance to set fresh intentions and put your manifestations in motion. Dream big! Taking place on May 7 2024, the upcoming new moon takes place in grounded, stable, sensual, beautiful, abundant, patient, romantic, reliable, slow-moving, and money-oriented Taurus, encouraging you to focus on the earthly manifestations of your values. Because Taurus is traditionally ruled by Venus—planet of love and luxury—this new moon will bring exciting developments to your love life and your financial status. Taurus is known for its connection to the five senses (sight, sound, taste, smell, and touch), so make sure you fully immerse yourself in the present moment and get connected to your body. Watch the anxiety fade away as you remember the beauty of your surroundings and feel brought back down to earth. Love and Light Monica aka Cocojor!

Chinese Lunar New Year 2025: Which zodiac animal are you? Do you know which Chinese Lunar New Year animal you are? This week’s new moon, on Wednesday, Jan. 29, signaled the beginning of the #LunarNewYear, which this year is called the “Year of the Snake.” It takes over from the “Year of the Dragon” in 2024 and precedes the “Year of the Horse” in 2026. A 15-day celebration, Chinese Lunar New Year continues until the full “Snow Moon” signals the beginning of the Lantern Festival on Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2025. However, the Year of the Snake will continue until Sunday, Feb. 16, 2026. Lunar New Year, sometimes called #SpringFestival, is celebrated in #Vietnam as Tết, Losar in #Tibet and Solnal in #Korea. Here’s why the moon, your precise birth date and even the planet Jupiter determine your Chinese zodiac identity. Why Your ‘Birth Moon’ Matters Working out your Chinese Lunar New Year animal might seem simple — you just match your birth year to the animal in the 12-year cycle. You'll often read things like, “If you were born in 2010, your Chinese zodiac animal is the tiger.” That’s not necessarily true. The Chinese calendar is based on the traditional Chinese lunisolar calendar, which uses the moon's phases and the Earth’s orbit around the sun. Since the moon’s phases don’t align with the solar calendar, if you were born in January or February, your zodiac animal might not match the animal associated with that Gregorian year. Calculating Your Lunar New Year Animal The exact date of the Chinese Lunar New Year changes each year, so those born early in the Gregorian year should check the exact date of Chinese New Year in their birth year. For example, Jan. 30, 1976, was in the Year of the Rabbit, while Jan. 31, 1976, was the Year of the Dragon. As many friends and colleagues prepare to welcome the New Lunar Year - Year of the Snake, I invite you to reflect on some of the qualities that make the snake such a meaningful and symbolic choice in the lunar calendar. In many cultures, the snake is a symbol of wisdom, transformation, and adaptability. Known for its ability to shed its skin, the snake represents renewal, growth, and the capacity to embrace change with grace. In the zodiac, the snake is often associated with intuition, intelligence, and calm determination. It encourages us to approach life’s challenges with a strategic mindset and a sense of quiet confidence. It's hard not to consider that these qualities could come handy this year as we navigate local, global and macro trends, as well as the reality of our life science/healthcare industry. May the Year of the Snake inspire us to drive and accept transformation, act with wisdom, and experience fulfillment, prosperity and positivity in all aspects of life.
