🌿 Indigenous Peoples (IPs) are vital for nature conservation. 📜 Global agreements acknowledge their knowledge, need to participate in decision making and their right to compensation. 🔎 Yet, IPs are often marginalized in research and technology development, relegated to low-level roles, or tokenized in FPIC processes, community engagement, and capacity building. 🌱 Growing corporate demand for high-quality nature data, the rise of nature-tech startups, and the growing use of AI in conservation highlight the value of this data - and an opportunity. 💡 Can data rights empower IPs beyond stakeholder status, granting them true ownership and benefit-sharing? For the last 6 months WarīNkwī Flores, Constanza Gomez Mont Lauren Serota and I have spoken to hundreds of technologists, Indigenous rights representatives, nature based solutions champions, corporations and AI-companies helping us to refine the vision and plan. 💡 We think that building a Data Governance Framework for nature related Indigenous People's data is central to ensuring their equal participation and fair compensation across environmental markets. 🙏🏻 So many of you have already helped us refine the scope and connected us with other brilliant groups and individuals who have worked in this space for years. We have so much to learn from each other. Together with NaturaTech LAC and Kinray Hub: Indigenous-led R&D we're kicking this off as this work NEEDS TO HAPPEN. We are still looking for partners that can support the work - and our self-imposed deadline of COP30 is approaching fast. Find me at the NatureTech Summit today - or reach out in DM's - if you want to get involved. The list of organizations raising their hand to support is growing.
