How did I end up in a hotel room with Melissa Etheridge? It's a long story... But before I share HOW I ended up there, I need to explain why attracting the right celebrity to your cause-oriented film is important. Celebrities can open doors to fundraisers, film festivals, awards, and distributors--but only if they believe in your cause. So, how do you get them to care about your cause-oriented film? 1. Research which celebrities care about your cause. There is public data about this if you know where to look. 2. Listen to who is speaking about your cause online. What platforms are they using? What keywords and hashtags are they using? 3. Contact their Manager. Agents look for money; Managers look for opportunities. You can find this information with a free trial on IMDb Pro. It took me years to distill my celebrity outreach into a 10-step process, but once I did, I had a 100% success rate for attracting celebrities to my films. I outline all of the steps in my course, How to Attract Celebrities to Your Film. 🔗 If you're looking for a celebrity to elevate your cause-oriented film, click the link in the comments. So, back to my story... After ten months of communication with Melissa Etheridge's Manager, the stars finally aligned. She was available next week if I met her on tour and filmed her interview across the hall from her hotel room. I flew to St. Louis with my cinematographer, Kimman Harmon. We disassembled the hotel bed with a travel-size screwdriver, set up the camera, lights, and mics, and had her Hair/Makeup/Wardrobe person watch via a monitor in the bathroom. Not ideal, but you can't tell any of this in the filmed interview. What's more, Melissa was so impressed by our ingenuity that she invited us to film her sound check, which saved us thousands of dollars in music licensing fees. The moral of the story is that when you find the right celebrity who cares about your cause, they go above and beyond to make your film successful.

EDITOR’s OPINION. The power of voice. At M.C. Talks, we believe that the voice is not merely an instrument of communication but a profound indicator of a person's inner life and intentions. As a hub for publishing, film production, author rights consulting, and personal branding, we recognize the pivotal role that voice plays in shaping narratives and influencing audiences. In the realm of cinema, especially those films adapted from books, the importance of voice cannot be overstated. Take, for instance, Morgan Freeman's iconic narration in "The Shawshank redemption," adapted from Stephen King's novella. Freeman’s calm, authoritative tone not only drives the narrative but also deepens the emotional connection with the audience. His voice becomes a character itself, embodying hope and resilience. Or consider Anthony Hopkins in "The silence of the lambs," based on the novel by Thomas Harris. Hopkins' portrayal of Hannibal Lecter is chillingly enhanced by his meticulous control of voice, shifting effortlessly from soothing tones to menacing whispers. This control exemplifies how a voice can convey complex layers of charm and danger. Recognizing the transformative power of voice, many seek the expertise of renowned voice coaches to enhance their public speaking and performance skills. Coaches like Patsy Rodenburg, who has worked with esteemed actors at the Royal Shakespeare Company, emphasize the importance of presence and breath. Rodenburg’s philosophy, "The second circle," teaches speakers to engage in a manner that is neither too forceful nor too withdrawn, but perfectly projected to command attention. Another prominent figure in the field is Arthur Joseph, whose Vocal Awareness Method has been instrumental for celebrities, CEOs, and broadcasters. Joseph’s method focuses on the conscious integration of voice with physical and emotional expression to achieve authenticity and impact. In preparing individuals for public speaking, we at M.C. Talks harness these teachings, understanding that voice reflects more than just words. It reveals a speaker's thoughts, health, occupation, and even financial status. As our founder often explains, "Voice is the music of our personal history playing out in real time." The interplay of voice in literature, film, and personal development underscores its significance as a tool for influence and connection. At M.C. Talks, whether through our films, books, or consultancy, we strive to empower voices to resonate with clarity and purpose. Join us on our Telegram and YouTube channels as we explore the profound connections between voice, storytelling, and personal growth. In this journey, we continue to discover how the nuanced art of voice not only shapes our narratives but also defines our identities in the ever-evolving tapestry of human expression. "𝑨𝒕𝒕𝒂𝒄𝒌 𝒘𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒆𝒏𝒆𝒎𝒚 𝒊𝒔 𝒖𝒏𝒑𝒓𝒆𝒑𝒂𝒓𝒆𝒅; 𝒂𝒑𝒑𝒆𝒂𝒓 𝒘𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒆𝒙𝒑𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒆𝒅." — 𝑺𝒖𝒏 𝑻𝒛𝒖, 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑨𝒓𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝑾𝒂𝒓. In business, this strategy is especially powerful when facing larger competitors. Rather than engaging in direct competition, focus on the opportunities they overlook. You don’t need to challenge the industry giant for market share head-on. Instead, target the smaller projects they consider insignificant, but that can be valuable to your business. By offering tailored packages that are perfect for your scale but too modest for the big players, you carve out a niche that’s both sustainable and profitable. Not everyone needs the luxury of a Hilton or Sheraton; many are content with the comfort and affordability of budget options like Ibis or Novotel. Find your niche, and thrive within it. By analyzing your industry, you'll uncover numerous niches—or "blue oceans"—ripe for exploration. As a #videographer and video producer, I’ve found my niche not in music videos or film production, but in #documentaryfilms and #corporatevideo #videoproduction. This focus allows me to excel and deliver exceptional results where my expertise truly shines. #geneva #nigeria

Why inspiration from real life is better than digital. A few weeks ago a director from Vienna told me she was going to be at the Buenos Aires independent Film Festival (BAFICI). Her name is Angela Christlieb and I had no idea who she was. But we had some common friends and I immediately accepted her invitation to see her latest movie at the film festival. The film was called "Pandora's legacy" and was a documentary about the family and the life of G.W. Pabst, a famous Austrian director from the beginning of the 20th century. People tend to forget how important it is to experience other creatives in real life. If somebody invites me for an exhibition, I always do my best to go there. If someone I know wrote a book, I want to read it. If somebody invites me to their latest film, I want to be there in person. Online inspiration is overrated. Of course, there's a huge source of creative inspiration available digitally. But it's a mistake to think that the digital version can replace watching the same movie in real life. I talked with Angela about her passion for film and how I saw that the audience interacted with her movie and asked her questions. This meant diving into the world of another creative instead of just reading about it. In these busy times when everything is available online, we tend to forget how important this is. If somebody you know gives a concert, an exhibition, has a book reading, made a film, gives a presentation, try your best to go there. That person is thankful that you took the trouble of going there in person and you learn so much more about the creative process than when you see the work online. What's your experience with offline vs. online inspiration? #creativity #inspiration #freelancecopywriter #movieindustry #buenosaires

Okay WOWOWOWOW - yesterday Club Ichi hosted our monthly Sounding Board on Zoom and the topic of conversation was In-House A/V. Let me tell you that I was yesterday years old when I learned that: 😮 As the event manager, I should be bringing my production team with me on the initial site visits to consider the pitfalls of each venue BEFORE I book it just because the dates/rates/space work for my group. 😮 I can negotiate rigging costs. 😮 I can lock in the A/V rental rates (without needing to know all the production specs for the program) a year or more out when I book the venue to avoid the 10%/year rising costs. 😮 My hotel sales rep can actually help me negotiate down the A/V costs because THEY are the in-house A/V company's client (not really me). Get the rest of the notes in the Club Ichi Slack channel (www.weareichi.com if you're not in Club Ichi yet.) So here's my sparky post to ask you, as event, production, and A/V professionals, let's crowdsource a planner's bill of rights to reference when working with in-house A/V. For example: 👉 I have the right to meet the team who will be onsite on the day of my event before show day. 👉 I have the right to keep the same crew who ran the rehearsal for event day. Lay it on me.
