This article really resonated with me. I am so guilty of putting too much pressure on holidays to be the fix or to have the ‘perfect’ holiday. My best breaks and memories are where I have no plans. No schedule. No expectations. We figure it out as we go along. Totally agree that when going on holiday with friends or family knowing what everyone wants is so key. Never assume, otherwise you are setting yourself up for conflict. Sometimes the best breaks for me are the simple ones. A reset. A change of scenery. A backpack. New is not always the best either. I need to be in the right mindset for exploring somewhere new. Sometimes familiarity with a place, where I don’t need to think makes for a more fulfilling break. Anyways. As I sit in North Wales in the sun at a place I have been to year after year for 30 yrs, I wish everyone a wonderful summer break whatever you do and wherever you go. — ‘we pile so much hope and expectation on to holidays. In our fantasies they are the reward, the reset, the solution. They are how we make new friends, broaden our cultural horizons, learn about other people and other places. If the rest of the year is the question, that precious holiday is the answer. They are the receptacle into which we pour everything. No wonder they are stressful.’
