Hello everyone. I'm Rick Borchelt, and I was guest editor for this very special issue of the Journal of Science Communication devoted to how we engage broader publics in discovery science. When we launched SIPEF, our first and frankly shocking finding was that only a truly negligible fraction of the more than a million and a half papers in the science communications literature dealt specifically with discovery science. A major goal of ours then became catalyzing and highlighting scholarship and practices that address both the challenges and the opportunities facing anyone working in basic science communication. This special issue of JCOM, which could only accept a handful of the many papers submitted for consideration, marks really important progress toward that goal. We hope it's only the first of many similar contributions spurred by our work at Zipup.
