🚀 Orbitraps on the Move: High-Resolution MS Beyond the Lab! We often hear that Orbitrap mass spectrometers are massive, power-hungry, and permanently stationed in labs—but times have changed! A recent study proves that today’s benchtop Orbitrap Exploris systems can be fully mobile—even operating on battery power while rolling down hospital hallways. Researchers mounted an Orbitrap Exploris on a wheeled cart, complete with a battery-powered UPS, rough pump, and gas cylinder, then moved it through a hospital—including into an elevator—all while collecting stable high-resolution data. Despite movement and acceleration, the instrument maintained mass accuracy within ±5 ppm and stable total ion current, proving that Orbitraps can deliver top-tier performance outside traditional lab spaces. 📄 Check out the full study here: Anal. Chem. 2024, 96, 8234−8242 https://lnkd.in/g4jpTde6 This mobility opens up exciting possibilities for field-based MS, online process monitoring, and real-time chemical analysis. And when combined with Karsa’s MION2—which enables multi-pressure chemical ionization (MPCI)—Orbitraps become even more powerful, offering ultra-sensitive, high-resolution detection of trace compounds in complex environments. Imagine using this setup for industrial process control, environmental monitoring, or even real-time detection of unknown chemicals in dynamic settings. Now, over to you!🫵🏼 🔹 What’s the farthest you’ve shipped or moved an Orbitrap?🛫 🔹 Have you ever used one in an unusual location?🌴🧊🚠 🔹 Any unexpected challenges (or successes) in running an Orbitrap outside the lab?🧪 Drop your stories in the comments! Let’s see where Orbitraps have been on the move! 🚛⚡ (Asked AI to create a picture from the paper—it struggled with the Orbitrap, which we then placed ourselves, but other than that, pretty cute! 😄) #Orbitrap #OrbitrapExploris
