I am convinced that the international advisory board ISAB has an enormous significance for IT:U. All members are renowned experts in their distinctive disciplines and are experienced in the development process of interdisciplinary universities or cross-disciplinary research. I highly appreciate their work and see them as substantial support for shaping IT:U. Wei Zhang is a new PhD-student at Mid Sweden University. In his Master's thesis, Wei focused on advancing methods for detecting and classifying marine microplastics. Now he will join the research team in the SENAVIS-project and conduct research on sensor technology for optical measurement of the concentration of chemicals in liquids on asphalt. Chemicals that are used for maintenance of winter roads and airports. Senavis is a collaboration between Mittuniversitetet and Norges teknisk-naturvitenskapelige universitet (NTNU) Trondheim Norway funded by Interreg Sweden-Norway, Trøndelag fylkeskommune and Avinor. A few weeks ago, Hao Li published the first paper of his #MSCA postdoctoral fellowship project ADeHEx funded by the European Commission. The paper presents a topology optimisation approach for microchannel cooling using homogenisation and de-homogenisation. The work builds on the so-called de-homogenisation approach now increasingly popular in the field and, thus, stands on the shoulders of previous work by Pantz and Trabelsi, Groen and sigmund, and Florian Feppon. Our contribution is the extension to conjugate heat transfer, although so far based on a diffusion-dominated heat transfer model. We are currently working on extending the work to convection-dominated heat transfer and other applications. The paper is published together with Pierre Jolivet in the "Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization" journal. We welcome Malik Dilshad to IREC - Institut de Recerca en Energia de Catalunya, who starts a MSCA-PF with us! Li-ion batteries still suffer from moderate energy density, relatively high costs and potential safety issues. Thus, scientists are constantly seeking for alternatives that are cheaper, safer, and more widely available. A promising candidate to replace conventional batteries are 𝗭𝗻-𝗮𝗶𝗿 𝗯𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 that rely on the oxidation of zinc with oxygen in the air. However, their adoption faces two main challenges: 🔹slow oxygen redox reactions 🔹unstable cathode materials To address these, Malik Dilshad is joining the Functional Nanomaterials Department at IREC under the supervision of Prof. ICREA andreu cabot in the framework of a Marie Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship (MSCA-PF) called 𝗛𝗘𝗠𝗭𝗔𝗕. The fellowship has a total budget of ~165k€ and will run for 2 years, starting this month. HEMZAB, which stand for “High Entropy Metal Chalcogenides as Air Breathing Cathodes in Reversible Zinc Air Batteries”, is a project that 𝗮𝗶𝗺𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵-𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗽𝘆 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗰𝗼𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗱𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘀 𝗼𝘅𝘆𝗴𝗲𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗼𝘅 𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝘁 to overcome the low performance and stability issues of current air cathodes used in reversible Zn-Air batteries. 📖 Read more here: 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dUjE4R32 #EUfunded #IRECprojects

🎉 Excited to announce that I presented my last paper as a Marie Curie PhD Candidate in the GECKO project at the IEEE SyNERGY MED 2024 conference in Cyprus: "Towards Edge-Computed NILM: Insights from a Mediterranean Use Case." This work was a collaboration between Plegma Labs, Intracom Telecom, and National Technical University of Athens, conducted as part of the MSCA GECKO Innovation and Training Network and ODEON project. Together, we explored our first edge-computed NILM approach using the Plegma Dataset ( https://lnkd.in/dQiA6h2e ) , one of the first from the Mediterranean area capturing local devices and energy consumption patterns and one of the basic outcomes of the GEKCO project. In this paper, we introduce a structured pruning methodology tailored for Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring (NILM). Our approach combines unstructured pruning to identify optimal sparsity in each layer with structured pruning to remove units accordingly. This dual approach preserves essential feature information, achieving up to a 48.85% reduction in model MFLOPs while maintaining high disaggregation accuracy—significantly optimizing inference without compromising performance. The SyNERGY MED 2024 IEEE conference was an inspiring venue to exchange ideas on energy transition in the Mediterranean. It was exciting to discuss critical issues like flexibility, interoperability, and energy conservation with peers dedicated to advancing this field.
