A heartfelt thank you to CEO Santiago Marquez and Executive Board Member Maria Guzman, MBA of the Latin American Association for hosting me for lunch and providing a tour of their beautiful Atlanta office. Learning more about the impactful services the Latin American Association provides to those in need was truly inspiring. Our discussions covered a wide range of topics, but a key focus was the ongoing cybersecurity crisis affecting the non-profit sector. Did you know that, according to Microsoft's 2021 Digital Defense Report, non-profit organizations are now the second most targeted sector by cybercriminals, representing 31% of all notifications of nation-state attacks globally? Let’s talk about a growing and dangerous threat that’s targeting not-for-profit organisations: social engineering attacks. Social engineering is when hackers manipulate people into revealing sensitive information or taking actions that compromise their organisation’s security. These attacks don’t rely on technical hacking—rather, they exploit human psychology. They might send an urgent email or call, requesting sensitive data or access. - Exploit emotions—they use empathy or urgency to push staff into acting without thinking. For instance, “This donation won’t go through without this info!” or “We need immediate access to the donor database for this emergency!” It’s not always obvious—it could be as simple as clicking on a link in an email or downloading an attachment. This week has been crazy, but I absolutely have to tell you that if you're interested in #Cybersecurity, you need to start going to Blue Team Con. This year's event was incredible. This is my second year volunteering - thank you so much Phoenix F., I can't wait to come back next year! I had an amazing experience, and learned so much. My favorite highlights: 🌟 Aria Langer talking about the challenges of #PrivilegedAccessManagement, and the difference between traditional vs. modern PAM. She is such an engaging speaker, and got a huge response to her highly informative content mixed with strangely accurate Ducktales references!! 🌟 Benjamin Speckien on combining OSINT with SIGINT, where OSINT lets you know who the threat actors may be, and SIGINT provides the where and when capturing real time movements. 🌟 Abian M., in part educating us on LUCR-3's notable TTPs, including SIM swapping, where the threat actor tricks a mobile carrier into transferring the victim's phone number! 🌟 Practicing my pitch for our Women in Cybersecurity (WiCyS) - UIC Chapter sponsorship material - I got great feedback on the sponsorship packet, and on pitching - priceless!
