How can electrochemistry free us from the chains of stoichiometric oxidants and reductants?

Reduction and oxidation reactions are a key component of the synthetic organic chemist, a major roadblock of these reactions are the large amounts of stoichiometric chemical reagents required to perform these reactions. By harnessing electricity, it is possible to avoid the use of large amounts of chemical reagents, instead relying on catalytic amounts of compounds that can be regenerated by the transport of electrons, or even having the electrons interact with your substrate directly. Here Jonathan has reviewed a selection of recently published work that utilizes electricity as their terminal reductant or oxidant, and considers how the process might be scaled beyond the laboratory bench. https://lnkd.in/e4MDWvnR #electrochemistry #redox #reduction #oxidation #scale-up
