I really love the topic of salary negotiation, so I have several tips in this one. The first one is to be honest with yourself about what feels fair to you. At a previous role, I was keeping tabs on similar compensation to the role that I was currently in and I felt that I was underpaid and it was becoming a distraction. But I really loved that company and I wanted to stick around. So I thought about it and had a number in mind and I was able to negotiate an off cycle raise and didn't have to leave companies just for a salary bump. The second tip is trying to understand what leverage you have so throughout your interview process. Ask questions if you can, like how long has the role been open? Are they looking to hire imminently? Is this a backfill? Is this new team? Keep in mind that recruiting and interviewing is not free.
