The Liberty and Democracy Group is a coalition of former presidents and leaders dedicated to defending democratic values, human rights, and freedom in their hemisphere. This organization, which has a long history of fighting for the preservation of democracy in Latin America, believes it is necessary to speak out and denounce the negative role played by Cuba. On April 19, 1995, Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols carried out the worst act of domestic terrorism in U.S. history, killing 168 people (19 of them children) and wounding hundreds more. When McVeigh carried out the bombing, he carried with him a copy of The Turner Diaries, and wore a T-shirt with the phrase "Sic semper tyrannis" on the front, and a Thomas Jefferson quote on the back: "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants." Like domestic terrorists before them and many after, McVeigh and Nichols fantasized about sparking a new civil war, a second American Revolution. This was the first case to put sovereign citizens on my radar as a violent threat. The Turner Diaries, the book McVeigh carried, is the source for the phrase 'the day of the rope ' used by so many advocating for hanging politicians and journalists they dislike. Writings by William Potter Gale, founder of Posse Comitatus which is considered one of the foundations of sovereign citizen ideology, advocated hanging any sheriff considered to have violated his oath. At the same time, his writing is the source for much of modern 'constitutional sheriff ' rhetoric. It's oxymoronic, but the people subscribing to the stuff that motivated McVeigh don't grasp that. For his crime, McVeigh was executed in 2001. The juxtaposition of another pro-Israel Trump nominee (Kash Patel, FBI director) against the picture this weekend of Joe Biden carrying a book that offers a factually incorrect and terribly anti-Israel version of Israel’s circumstance, highlights how binary was and is the significance of the recent election. Instead of more years under Harris of equivocation and mealy mouthed support for the only Democracy in the Middle East and the tip of the spear in the west’s existential fight against radical Islamists, we have clear eyed American leadership that understands the nature of the conflict and what must be done in order for our civilization to be saved. I shudder imagining the alternative to a Trump presidency and look forward to robust support for Israel and western values in the coming years.
